University of Kerala

The University of Kerala, one of the earliest 16 universities in India, has a rich history dating back to its founding as the University of Travancore in 1937. Originally located in the princely state of Travancore, which is now part of southern Kerala and some areas of Tamil Nadu, the university has undergone many changes over the past 7 decades.

It's hard to capture all that Kerala University is in just a few words. Its roots trace back to two key institutions of modern education in Kerala: the University College, Thiruvananthapuram, and the Trivandrum Observatory.

The University College started as Maharaja Swathi Thirunal's Free School in 1834, later evolving into a college in 1866. Initially affiliated with Madras University, its departments became part of the University of Travancore before transitioning back to the University of Kerala in 1957. Today, the University College remains affiliated with Kerala University.
