What after Prelims Examination?

Candidates who pass the UPSC Prelims exam will move on to the next stage, which is the CSE Mains. The CSE Mains has two parts: written exams and an interview, also known as the personality test. The written exams cover various subjects and test the candidates' knowledge and understanding in detail.

After completing the written exams, candidates will have an interview. This interview is to assess their personality, communication skills, and suitability for a career in civil services. The interview panel will ask questions to see how well the candidates can think on their feet and handle different situations.

Passing both the written exams and the interview is necessary to be selected for various central government services like IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS. Only those who score well in both parts will be considered for these important positions.

Exam Pattern

The UPSC civil services preliminary exam consists of two papers with objective-type questions, totaling 400 marks.

The exam is held in two sessions:

  • First Session (9:30 am - 11:30 am): General Studies (GS) covering Indian polity, Geography, History, Indian economy, Science and Technology, Environment and Ecology, and International relations.

  • Second Session (2:30 pm - 4:30 pm): Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) with reasoning and analytical questions, reading comprehension questions, and decision-making questions.

After the preliminary exam, UPSC will release a list of successful candidates eligible for the Main exam, with a minimum qualifying score of 33%.
