A criminal complaint from March 2, 2020, alleges that Perry had threatened to kill anyone who called the police on him or got him admitted to a hospital and that he kept buying more guns while ranting about how bad the police were and how he would kill them. The complaint also alleges that Perry had been driving with two guns in his car.

According to the Department of Justice, a shootout occurred in the Village of Cameron, located approximately 95 miles east of Minneapolis, starting with a traffic stop conducted by a Chetek Police Department officer. Gunfire was exchanged between someone in the vehicle and the officer or officers who responded to the stop.
Both Officer Breidenbach and Officer Scheel were declared dead at the scene, while Perry was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The DOJ did not provide further details. The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is leading the investigation and is receiving assistance from various local and state law enforcement agencies.
DCI will submit its investigative reports to the Barron County District Attorney upon completion of the investigation. "These are two exceptional officers who deserve nothing less than the report that will be issued by the DA's office," stated Brian Wright, Barron County DA.
