Cara Harding makes a startling discovery about her patient, David/Adam/Wesley. It turns out that he was a hypocritical preacher from the turn of the century who was cursed to carry the souls of those who lacked faith. Surprisingly, all the different personalities he exhibits are actually the souls he has accumulated from those who were devoid of belief, including David, Adam Sabre, and Wesley Crite.
After having already taken her doctor's father's soul, he now targets Cara's daughter, Sammy, who has lost her faith following her father's demise. In an attempt to save Sammy, Cara, accompanied by Virgil, seeks help from the mountain-dwelling people who possess the power to grant salvation. Unfortunately, they are unable to assist her in this matter.
Just as the situation seems dire, David emerges, resulting in Virgil sacrificing himself while trying to prevent David from claiming Sammy's life and soul. Witnessing this, Cara manages to fatally wound David by impaling him through the throat with a protruding branch. As David breathes his last breath, Sammy is miraculously revived.
