Assassin's Creed Valhalla is an action role-playing video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft in 2020. It is the twelfth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, serving as the successor to 2018's Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The game is primarily set in the years 872–878 AD, during the Viking expansion into the British Isles.

Players assume the role of Eivor Varinsdottir, a Viking raider who seeks to establish a new Viking clan in England but becomes entangled in the long-standing conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood, champions of peace and freedom, and the Templar Order, who aim to achieve peace through control. The game also includes a modern-day framing story, following Layla Hassan, an Assassin who relives Eivor's memories to uncover a way to save the Earth from destruction.

Development of Assassin's Creed Valhalla began in 2017, around the time of Assassin's Creed Origins' release. Ubisoft Montreal led the three-year development process, with contributions from fourteen other Ubisoft studios worldwide, as well as Sperasoft. Key figures from previous Assassin's Creed games returned for Valhalla, including Ashraf Ismail, who served as the creative director for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Origins.

Darby McDevitt, the lead writer for Black Flag and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, also played a significant role in Valhalla's narrative. Composers Jesper Kyd and Sarah Schachner, along with musician Einar Selvik, crafted the game's soundtrack. Extensive research into the Viking era was conducted to ensure historical accuracy, and Norse mythology inspired certain aspects of the game's story.

The development team aimed to address player feedback from Assassin's Creed Odyssey, focusing more on the Assassin-Templar conflict and reintroducing traditional Assassin's Creed gameplay elements like social stealth. Assassin's Creed Valhalla was released on November 10, 2020, for PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Stadia, with the PlayStation 5 version following on November 12.

AC Valhalla Plot

In the year 2020, Earth's magnetic field mysteriously strengthens, causing detrimental effects on the planet. Layla Hassan, Shaun Hastings, and Rebecca Crane, members of the Assassin Brotherhood, receive a signal with coordinates in New England. There, they uncover the remains of a Viking raider. Layla, struggling with the influence of the Staff of Hermes Trismegistus, enters the Animus to explore the memories of the Viking raider.

The story begins in Norway, in the year 855 CE. A young Eivor Varinsdottir witnesses her hometown being attacked and her parents killed by the warlord Kjotve the Cruel. She is rescued by Sigurd, son of King Styrbjorn of the Raven Clan. Seventeen years later, Eivor, now adopted by Styrbjorn, seeks vengeance against Kjotve. Despite her latest attempt being unsuccessful, she retrieves her father's axe and experiences a vision of Odin.

This vision leads her to consult Valka, a local seeress. Valka induces another vision, revealing Sigurd losing his arm and being consumed by a giant wolf. Sigurd returns from an expedition accompanied by Basim and Hytham, members of the Hidden Ones, an ancient order fighting against the Order of the Ancients. They came to Norway to assassinate Kjotve, a member of the Order.

Defying Styrbjorn's orders, Eivor and Sigurd enlist King Harald's help to eliminate Kjotve. Following their victory, Harald declares his intention to unite Norway under his rule. This decision angers Sigurd, who had expected to inherit the crown. In response, Sigurd and Eivor lead loyal members of the clan on an exodus to England, establishing the settlement of Ravensthorpe.

Eivor's mission in England is to secure alliances with neighboring Saxon kingdoms and Viking clans, while also assisting Hytham in eliminating local members of the Order. Eivor continues to experience visions. Valka provides her with an elixir that allows her to dream of Asgard from Odin's perspective. In these dreams, Eivor witnesses Odin's attempts to avert his fated death during Ragnarök.

Odin imprisons Fenrir, Loki's son who is prophesied to kill him, and seeks a magical mead in Jotunheim to ensure the reincarnation of the Aesir. Layla, who relives these memories, realizes they are actually visions of the Isu, an ancient advanced civilization, shortly before their downfall. She discovers that Loki found a way to ensure his survival despite being forbidden from reincarnating after betraying Odin.

Sigurd and Basim discover an Isu relic, leading Sigurd to believe he is a god with Basim's encouragement. However, Fulke, an agent of King Aelfred of Wessex and a member of the Order, captures Sigurd, believing him to be an Isu or a descendant. She tortures Sigurd and removes his arm. Eivor and Basim rescue Sigurd, kill Fulke, and uncover an Isu temple with a complex computer system.

Connecting to the system, Eivor and Sigurd find themselves seemingly transported to Valhalla, a dream-world of eternal battles. Realizing it is an illusion, they resist Odin's influence and escape. Outside the simulation, Basim reveals himself to be overtaken by Loki's personality and attacks Eivor. With Sigurd's help, they manage to trap Basim within the Isu computer.

Sigurd relinquishes leadership of the clan to Eivor, who continues to forge alliances and leads an assault on Wessex alongside Guthrum. They defeat Aelfred's forces at the Battle of Chippenham

AC Valhalla Ending Explained

Assassin's Creed Valhalla has multiple endings depending on the choices made throughout the game.

Good Ending

In this ending, Eivor forms alliances, builds a strong settlement in England, and achieves victory against the Order of the Ancients. Eivor confronts King Aelfred, the Grand Master of the Order, and learns about his motivations. Instead of killing him, Eivor spares Aelfred, believing that his vision of a new God-fearing order is a better path than the corrupted Order of the Ancients. Eivor returns to Ravensthorpe as a hero and leader.

Poor Ending

If Eivor makes certain choices that hinder their alliances or fails to gain enough support, this ending occurs. In this outcome, Eivor's actions result in a weaker settlement and failure to fully eradicate the Order of the Ancients. It leaves Eivor with a sense of disappointment and a fragmented clan.

Modern Day Ending

In the present-day storyline, Layla Hassan, a member of the Assassin Brotherhood, enters the Isu temple in Norway to stabilize Earth's magnetic field. She encounters Basim, who reveals that he orchestrated events to bring Eivor to the attention of the Assassins. After stabilizing the magnetic field, Basim traps Layla in the simulation. However, Layla meets a being called "the Reader" and chooses to work with them to prevent future disasters, sacrificing her mortal body.

It's important to note that the specific choices made throughout the game can significantly impact the ending and the overall narrative experience. Different players may have different variations of the ending based on their decisions and actions during the game.
