Alice in Borderland, a Netflix series adapted from Haro Aso's manga, is perhaps the most directly influenced by the Alice in Wonderland theme, aside from direct adaptations of Lewis Carroll's novel. The show follows protagonist Arisu as he navigates a surreal version of Tokyo, engaging in perilous and violent games in the company of characters named Chishiya (cat) and (mad) Hatter. The presence of a Queen of Hearts villain further reinforces the Alice in Wonderland connection.
In 2020, the first season of the show was released, followed by the season 2 finale that aired towards the end of the previous month. During the second season's penultimate episode, the outlook for the main characters was bleak. Niragi provoked a gun battle with Arisu and Chishiya, causing the latter to suffer a life-threatening injury while saving Usagi. Soon after, the King of Spades appeared on the scene for a grand and climactic confrontation, leaving all characters except for Arisu and Usagi seemingly gravely wounded.
In the ultimate game, the Queen of Hearts, Arisu brings Usagi with him. Mira, who was shown in the abandoned control room at the end of season 1, serves as the Game Master. Mira proposes a seemingly simple game of croquet, but spends most of the game manipulating both players. She convinces Arisu that the Borderlands are simply an illusion of his making, and he almost gives up until Usagi cuts herself, proving that the world they are in is indeed real. After this, the two reveal their feelings for each other, and Arisu snaps out of Mira's trance just in time.
Although Mira wins the croquet game, it is irrelevant since Arisu wins the overall game by not forfeiting or quitting. With the defeat of all the Face Cards, Mira is assassinated by a mysterious sky laser, and the remaining players are given the option to either stay in the world or return to their own. All the players, except for Banda and Yaba, decline to remain.
They wake up in a hospital where Arisu learns that a meteor destroyed a large portion of Tokyo, and those who had not yet died were transported to the Borderlands, a type of purgatory. Although none of the players remember their time together in the Borderlands, Arisu and Usagi meet again at a vending machine in the hospital, and a future between them appears possible. As the camera pans over the hospital grounds filled with contented people, a table with playing cards is shown, and all of them blow away, except for one: the Joker.

Ryohei Arisu is a young man who has trouble connecting with his family and prefers hanging out with his friends, Daikichi Karube and Chōta Segawa. While Arisu and Chota are often immature and unmotivated at school, Karube manages a bar and urges them to take life seriously. One day, they witness blinding fireworks at a train station and find themselves transported to a post-apocalyptic version of Karube's bar. They meet Saori Shibuki, who informs them that they are now in a place called the Borderlands, where they must play games to survive. The group is introduced to a deadly game called 'Three of Clubs' named 'Good Fortune, Bad Fortune', where they must answer obscure questions or face being shot with flaming arrows. After surviving several games, they encounter the "Mad Hatter," who wants to collect all the cards from the game's deck to return to their world. The Beach, a hotel where players reside, becomes the game stage for the final game of the first stage, the Ten of Hearts. Upon completion of the game, the gamemasters reveal that there will be a second stage consisting of games based on the face cards.
