Team Fortress 2 Wiki

Team Fortress 2, developed and published by Valve Corporation in 2007, is a highly popular multiplayer first-person shooter game. Serving as the sequel to the original Team Fortress mod for Quake and its subsequent remake, Team Fortress Classic, the game had a lengthy development period after its initial announcement in 1998.

Team Fortress 2 revolves around two opposing teams, RED and BLU, and provides players with a choice of nine distinct character classes. The gameplay features various modes such as capture the flag and king of the hill. Team Fortress 2 has garnered widespread critical acclaim due to its exceptional art direction, engaging gameplay, clever humor, and well-developed characters.

Many consider it to be one of the greatest video games ever made. Valve continues to support the game through official servers and regular seasonal updates via the Steam Workshop. In 2011, the game transitioned to a free-to-play model, with optional in-game purchases for cosmetic items.

The drop system also grants players in-game equipment and items at periodic intervals. Competitive play, including ranked matchmaking and improved casual gameplay, was introduced in 2016. Unfortunately, since early 2020, Team Fortress 2 has encountered issues related to the presence of bot accounts that employ cheating software, causing disruptions and negatively affecting fair gameplay for legitimate players.

Team Fortress 2 Gameplay

In most game modes of Team Fortress 2, the BLU and RED teams engage in combat to achieve specific objectives. Players have the option to select from nine character classes, each possessing unique strengths, weaknesses, and weapon loadouts.

Balancing these classes is crucial for effective teamwork, as their abilities interact within the team-based environment. While some class abilities have changed from previous iterations of Team Fortress, the core elements of each class, including a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, and a melee weapon, have remained consistent.

The game initially launched with six official maps, but subsequent updates have introduced over a hundred additional maps, including those created by the community. Upon selecting a game mode for the first time, players are presented with an introductory video that provides guidance on completing the objectives.

Throughout matches, the Administrator, voiced by Ellen McLain, makes announcements over loudspeakers. The player limit for a single match varies across platforms, with 16 players on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and 24 players on Windows. However, an update in 2008 expanded the Windows edition to support up to 32 players using a server variable.

Team Fortress 2 stands out as Valve's first multiplayer game to offer detailed statistics for individual players. These statistics include the total time spent playing as each class, highest points obtained, and most objectives completed in a single life.

Persistent statistics allow players to track their performance in relation to these metrics, such as coming close to breaking their personal record for damage inflicted in a round. The game also incorporates a wide range of achievements tied to specific tasks, such as achieving a certain number of kills or completing rounds within specific time limits.

Updates have introduced class-specific achievements that reward players with weapons upon completion. Furthermore, a random drop system has been implemented, allowing players to acquire items by simply playing the game.

Team Fortress 2 Post-Release

Since its release, Valve has consistently provided free updates and patches for Team Fortress 2, available through Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux users. These updates serve to enhance the software's reliability, tweak gameplay mechanics, and introduce new features and gameplay modes.

Associated marketing materials, such as comics and videos, are often provided on the Team Fortress 2 website to accompany these updates. Valve maintains a blog to keep players informed about ongoing developments in the game. Each class in Team Fortress 2 has received dedicated patches that introduce new weapons, items, and gameplay changes.

These patches typically coincide with the release of the respective class's "Meet the Team" video. Major updates have also brought forth new gameplay modes like Payload, Payload Race, Training, Highlander, Medieval, and Mann vs. Machine. Themed patches, such as the annual "Scream Fortress" event around Halloween, offer unique items that are only available for a limited time.

Valve has empowered the community to create their own maps, weapons, and cosmetic items through a contribution site. The most popular creations are often incorporated into the game as official content. This approach has formed the foundation for the Steam Workshop functionality, allowing players to easily access and install community-made content.

Valve has collaborated with community creators, with one instance involving over fifty users contributing to an official content update. Valve has reported substantial financial compensation to community contributors, with over $10 million paid to more than 400 individuals by June 2013.

In terms of platform support, Team Fortress 2 received updates for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with uncertain prospects for the latter. However, the PlayStation 3 version did receive an update addressing graphical and connectivity issues.

Updates on PC, planned for future release on Xbox 360, included new official maps, game modes, class tweaks, and unlockable weapons through the achievement system. Valve attempted to negotiate with Microsoft for free updates on Xbox 360 but eventually released bundled updates at a cost due to the expense of patching on the platform.

However, no further patches were released for the console versions after 2009, effectively discontinuing their development. The PlayStation 3 servers for Team Fortress 2 went offline on March 29, 2023. Team Fortress 2 was made available for macOS shortly after the release of Steam for the operating system in June 2010.

Players who participated during the early period received virtual earbuds, which could be worn in the game on both macOS and Windows platforms. Valve extended the giveaway period until August 16.
