It originally aired on Fox from June 11, 2002, to April 7, 2016, spanning 15 seasons. After a two-year hiatus, the show was revived and began airing on ABC on March 11, 2018.

The series was introduced as an addition to the Idols format, which was based on the British television show Pop Idol.
