Austin Butler's voice changed before and after his role as Elvis Presley in the movie directed by Baz Luhrmann. Prior to the role, his voice had a higher pitch but as he got deeper into the role, his voice became deeper and closer to the way Presley spoke. Butler studied Presley for over two years and isolated himself from his family to prepare for the role, speaking in Presley's voice all the time during that period. His director, Baz Luhrmann, said that Butler's voice changed physically due to the training he underwent for the role. Butler's vocal coach, Irene Bartlett, said that the Southern drawl Butler adopted for the role has become a part of him and that it may be there forever. In an interview, Butler compared the changes in his speaking voice to a stage persona and speculated that it might happen for future roles due to his personality.
