Baldurs Gate 3 How to Free Shadowheart?

In the prologue, while attempting to escape the Nautiloid Ship, you will encounter various characters and creatures who seem to share your immediate desire to escape, if not your ultimate goal. Having assistance from these characters can make reaching the helm of the ship and escaping much easier.

Leaving potential allies in the grasp of mind flayers might not be the best way to build a positive relationship with them. This guide will explain how to free Shadowheart from the Mind Flayer Pod in Baldur's Gate 3.

After navigating through the Nautiloid ship, you'll encounter two encounters with Imps - the first shortly after meeting Lae'zel and the second after exiting to the exterior of the ship and going up some stairs. Next, head towards the northern end of the ship and then go east to reenter the interior. Break, shoot, smash, or blast your way through a Mucous Membrane barrier to reach a chamber where you'll find more Mind Flayer Pods.

Inside this chamber, there's a console housing three Sigils, but for now, ignore it and focus on checking out the pods located along the northern end of the room. One of these pods contains a rather noisy occupant.

Freeing Shadowheart - Warlock and Wizard

  • Investigate the Pod:Shadowheart implores you to free her, causing consternation among Lae'zel and the party members eager to reach the helm. As a Warlock or a Wizard, you have additional dialog options available.

[Arcana 7] Identify the Magic:

  • Succeed at this Arcana check to deduce that the pod's wards are connected to a nearby console.

Inspect the Console:

  • Head to the east of the pod and examine the console if you succeeded at the previous Arcana check.

[Warlock/Wizard] Inscribe the Glyphs:

  • If you're a Wizard and succeeded at the Arcana check, pick this option to inscribe the console with the glyphs sensed from the pod's warding runes.

[Arcana 10] Examine the Powered-up Console:

  • Optionally, attempt this Arcana check to get a closer look at the powered-up console. Passing this check is not required to open the pod.

Place Your Hand on the Console:

  • Choose this option to free Shadowheart. An [Illithid] [Wisdom 0] check follows, but with a DC of zero, it's challenging to fail.

Talk to Shadowheart:

  • After she is free, converse with Shadowheart and select the dialog option, "All right then, let’s get going. I’m [charname]." to invite her to join your party.

Obtaining the Eldritch Rune

Search a Dead Thrall to the East:

  • For non-Wizard characters, go through the fleshy door to the east and reach another chamber. Look for a Dead Thrall at the eastern edge of the room.

Find the Elaborate Key:

  • Search the Dead Thrall and retrieve the Elaborate Key.

Retrieve the Eldritch Rune:

  • Return to the room where Shadowheart is trapped. Look for a table along the southeastern edge with an Elaborate Chest. Use the Elaborate Key to open the chest or, if you're a Rogue, attempt a [Sleight of Hand 10] check with Thieve's Tools.

Interface with the Console:

  • Pick up the Eldritch Rune from the chest and use it to interact with the console east of Shadowheart's pod.

Opening the Pod (Non-Wizard Characters)

Insert the Eldritch Rune:

  • Place the Eldritch Rune in the socket on the console.

Place Your Hand on the Console:

  • Follow the same option as before, and then pass the [Illithid] [Wisdom 0] check.

Invite Shadowheart:

  • Once the pod is open, speak to Shadowheart and ask her to join your breakout attempt.

Free Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate III

  • Examine the console to the right of Shadowheart's pod and notice a socket where an item can be placed inside.
  • Go through the Sphincter to the room east of the one with Shadowheart. You'll find a figure in a pod similar to Shadowheart's ahead of you.
  • Walk past the figure to the opposite end of the room.
  • Next to the Cartilaginous Chest, there is a "Dead Thrall." Search their body to discover an Eldritch Rune.
  • Take the Eldritch Rune back to Shadowheart's console and choose "Insert the Rune into the Socket," then "Place Your Hand on the Console."
  • As you interact with the console, something in your head will trigger.
  • Select "[Illithid] [Wisdom]: Will the pod to open" to attempt to open the pod.

Baldur's Gate Gameplay

Baldur's Gate III is a role-playing video game that offers both single-player and cooperative multiplayer modes. Players have the option to create one or more characters and assemble a party with computer-generated companions to embark on the game's story. Additionally, players can team up online with others, using one of their characters to form a cooperative party.

In contrast to previous entries in the Baldur's Gate series, Baldur's Gate III features turn-based combat, similar to Larian Studios' earlier games Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin II. However, this time, the combat system is based on the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules, adding depth and strategy to the gameplay.
