What is Soul Coin in Baldur's Gate III?

Soul Coins in Baldur's Gate III are rare and enigmatic items found in the Nine Hells, a hellish region in the game's world. They are created by binding a soul into a coin, which then becomes a powerful currency and resource for devils and their allies. Players can discover these valuable coins while exploring and completing quests throughout the game.

In Avernus, the hell-like region of Baldur's Gate 3, Soul Coins hold significant importance and can be used to trade for various items and resources. They also possess the ability to power infernal machines, adding to their allure and value.

Despite the moral implications of using currency that contains bound souls, players can employ Soul Coins as a bargaining tool or bribe within the game's intricate mechanics. As players venture through this dark and immersive world, the quest for Soul Coins becomes both a rewarding challenge and an essential aspect of the game's storyline.

Baldurs Gate 3 Soul Coin Locations

In Baldur's Gate 3, there are currently four known locations where players can find Soul Coins.

Druid's Grove

The first location is at Druid's Grove, where players can obtain a Soul Coin from the Tiefling named Nadira. If players save her from a Bugbear Assassin's attack, she may reward them with a Soul Coin after a dice check. Alternatively, players can loot her corpse if they choose not to save her.

Dank Crypt

The second location is inside the Dank Crypt, accessible through the door where Shadowheart is found. A Soul Coin can be found lying on the floor near the first sarcophagus on the left. There is also another Soul Coin in the Crypt, located in the room with the book of the dead gods on the right side of another sarcophagus.

Cabin at Blighted Village

The third location is inside a cabin at Blighted Village, where a Soul Coin can be found on a box.

As of the time of writing, the purpose and important uses of these Soul Coins in the game remain uncertain. While they fetch a high price, players are advised to keep them in their inventory until their true significance is revealed in future updates or the full release of Baldur's Gate 3.

How to Get Baldurs Gate 3 Soul Coin

There are currently only 4 Soul Coins for players to obtain in Baldur’s Gate 3 at the moment but this will likely change once the game leaves early access. Each Coin can be obtained by collecting them from various locations.

Dank Crypt:

Head east from the Roadside Cliffs waypoint to reach the Dank Crypt area in the Overgrown Ruins. Players can access the crypt by either going through the main door or shooting the hanging rock in the Chapel Entrance and jumping down through the hole it creates. Once inside, they will encounter bandits that need to be dealt with. Players can also choose to lockpick a hatch further east to enter the Dank Crypt directly, but it's a more challenging option. Within the crypt, players will find the following Soul Coins:

The first coin is in the room with the giant sarcophagus at the south end of the Dank Crypt. It is specifically located in the right-hand sarcophagus on the west side of the room.

The second coin is in a sarcophagus in a side room to the west of the area with the big statue and the Entombed Acolyte corpses.

The third coin is inside Wither's sarcophagus, which is hidden in a room behind the big statue. Players need to press a button to open the door, but it will awaken the acolytes. After defeating them, players can loot Wither's coffin to obtain the Soul Coin. Make sure to grab the Amulet of Lost Voices from the nearby chest, as it allows communication with the dead.

Druid's or Emerald Grove Grove:

The fourth Soul Coin can be obtained by saving Nadira from a Bugbear Assassin in the Emerald Grove. When players approach Nadira on the top of a rocky outcrop, the assassin will appear, and combat will ensue. Players can choose to save Nadira by defeating the assassin.

If Nadira survives, players can use Deception or feign ignorance before rolling Persuasion or Intimidation to obtain the Soul Coin from her as a reward. Alternatively, if Nadira dies during the encounter, players may be able to loot the Soul Coin from her corpse or potentially pickpocket her to obtain it.

What Does the Soul Coins Do?

In Baldur's Gate 3, Soul Coins serve multiple purposes. Firstly, they can be used as currency in the hellish region of Avernus. They power infernal engines and are likely used for trade and transactions among devils and other entities in that realm.

Secondly, Soul Coins can be consumed by certain characters, such as Karlach, to activate their abilities or enhance their powers. For instance, Karlach can use a Soul Coin to power up the infernal machine within her, granting her the "Infernal Fury" condition until a long rest. This condition adds additional fire damage to her melee attacks when she is raging or when her HP falls below 25%. Players should consider using Soul Coins wisely, as they may have other significant uses or potential interactions later in the game.
