Who is Barbara Harmer?
Barbara Harmer, born on 14th September 1953 in the town of Bognor Regis, a seaside resort town in West Sussex, England was the first qualified female Concorde pilot. Despite leaving school early to become a hairdresser, she later became an air traffic controller and pursued her passion for flying, eventually obtaining her Commercial Pilot Licence in May 1982 her career as a pilot took off when she got the job of commuter flight small airline company Genair in Humberside airport. In March 1984 she joined British Caledonian Three years later the company was merged with British Airways. In 1992, Harmer was chosen to undergo the intensive six-month conversion course for Concorde, and on March 25, 1993, she became the first qualified female Concorde pilot. She flew Concorde for 10 years until its retirement in 2003, after which she converted to the Boeing 777. Harmer was also a qualified commercial Yachtmaster and enjoyed competing in international events. Andrew Hewett her partner of many years and new husband -- they had married on 24th January 2011, and Barbara died on 20th February 2011 at the age of 57.

Barbara Harmer's cause of death was Ovarian cancer. She was diagnosed with it 18 months before her ambitious original single-handed transatlantic yacht race her partner and husband Andrew Hewett said to argus tabloid. She could not participate in it. Her private funeral was held in Chichester crematorium her ashes will be scattered from a Tiger Moth plane flown by our friend Captain Les Brodie, who landed the last ever Concorde flight. It will be a fitting end to a remarkable life. We will distribute the ashes through a special tube at the side of the plane into the sea at the foot of her garden. Her husband said to the same tabloid. We don't know the exact medical reasons for how one can get this cancer.

Barbara Harmer died on 20 February 2011. Her aviation career took off when she started attending classes for pilot training when she had taken a loan of 10,000 pound Barbara's career began at Genair, a commuter airline, and later moved on to British Caledonian in 1984. She started flying on short-haul routes with British Aircraft Corporation BAC 1-11 aircraft before transitioning to the larger McDonnell Douglas DC-10 on long-haul flights. Barbara's dream of flying Concorde was finally realized when British Caledonian merged with British Airways in 1987. However, with over 3,000 pilots employed at BA, the number of women pilots was limited to just 60. in 1992 Barbara was selected for Concorde training.

Her first historic Concorde flight was on March 25th1993 she had undergone 6 months of rigorous training qualified her as the first female pilot to fly Concorde between the route of JFK and London Heathrow one of the most memorable flights was when she flew the Manchester United football team to their epic Champion’s League Final in Barcelona. “I was thrilled and honored to be asked to fly the team on their historic journey to Barcelona and felt quite emotional as I taxied the Concorde out to the runway, with British flags flying and thousands of people wishing the team luck on the way”. She finally took Volunteer redundancy in 2009 before flying Boeing 777. She was also a qualified RYA Commercial Offshore Yacht-Master.
