Most people outside mainland China saw the release of TikTok on devices like iOS and Android in 2017. However, the app only worked globally on 2 August 2018, when it was connected with Musical.ly, another Chinese social media site.

The challenge involves flashing or revealing a body part, and it reportedly received its name from the TikTok creator @oopsfoopahhhh, who posted a video flashing her breasts and kickstarting the trend.
The trend received quick criticism from some who argued that such content should be strictly banned from the app as it is primarily consumed by teenagers. One user expressed, "This foopah trend on TikTok is ridiculous," while another commented that creators engaging in the trend are breaking rules and exposing minors to inappropriate content. Some expressed concern for the safety of children on the app, with one person stating, "I ain't wit it cuz there's hella kids here," and another expressing that "humanity is lost." Others shared their disgust with the trend, with comments such as "That's disgusting" and "It's ridiculous." One user even admitted to blocking several accounts engaged in the trend and stated, "Kinda weird to flash people on an app that's primarily for children."

Foopahh had many accounts on the site, most of which are now banned. She used various methods to hide the explicit content, including standing far away in a dark corner, reflecting a flash in a mirror, and hiding the majority of her breasts behind her long hair. Her most popular method was hiding behind a door and peeking at her breast from behind it for a moment before emerging fully dressed. In February, other creators on the platform, mostly OnlyFans models, started using these methods for their own virality. The "behind the door" method became the most popular. These videos started to gain increased attention when the TikTok algorithm started pushing them onto the For You Page, sparking a massive viral trend. However, the trend has faced criticism, with many arguing that this form of content should be banned from the app as it is consumed by teenagers.
