Big Ten Volleyball

Big Ten Volleyball is a group of women's volleyball teams from 14 universities in the Big Ten Conference. These universities, like Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Penn State, have a strong history of success in NCAA national semifinals, with eight different teams making a combined 36 appearances through 2021. Notably, in 1987, Illinois was the first Big Ten program to reach the national semifinal, and in 1999, Penn State secured the conference's first national championship.

Over the years, teams like Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin have also made appearances in the national championship games. In 2011, Nebraska, previously a member of the Big 12, joined the Big Ten and has since won five national championships. Each week, outstanding players in the Big Ten Volleyball are recognized for their performances.  These recognitions include Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week, Setter of the Week, and Freshman of the Week.

For example, in the week of November 21-26, 2023, notable performances included Sarah Franklin from Wisconsin as Player of the Week, Savannah Kjolhede from Indiana as Defensive Player of the Week, Taylor Anderson from Purdue as Setter of the Week, and Mia Tuman from Ohio State as Freshman of the Week. These weekly awards showcase the talent and achievements of players throughout the season, contributing to the overall excitement and competitiveness of Big Ten Volleyball.

Big 10 Volleyball Awards Winners 2023

The Big Ten volleyball award winners for the week of November 21-26, 2023, are as follows:

Player of the Week:

• Sarah Franklin, Wisconsin
  • Sr. – Outside Hitter – Lake Worth, Fla. – Lake Worth Christian – Major: Communication Arts
  • Averaged 5.00 kills/set, totaling 30 kills on 70 attempts for a .329 hitting percentage
  • Helped the Badgers to a 2-0 week with wins over No. 1 Nebraska and Iowa
  • Added 15 digs, three blocks, and 31.5 points for an average of 5.25 points/set
  • Tallied her seventh double-double (16 kills, 12 digs) of the season on Friday vs. the Huskers

Defensive Player of the Week:

• Savannah Kjolhede, Indiana
  • Sr. – Middle Blocker – Colleyville, Texas – Grapevine – Major: Management
  • Totaled 16 blocks in Indiana’s 2-0 week at Michigan State and Michigan
  • Helped Indiana limit both opponents to a .130 hitting percentage or less
  • Tallied nine blocks (seven assists, two solo) in a 3-1 victory at Michigan State
  • Also recorded 15 kills in the two matches, finishing with a .393 hitting percentage on 28 attempts
  • Helped the Hoosiers match the program’s regular season wins record (21)

Setter of the Week:

• Taylor Anderson, Purdue
  • Fr. – Setter – San Antonio, Texas – Cornerstone Christian – Major: Kinesiology
  • Led the Big Ten in week 14 with 11.50 assists per set
  • Guided Purdue to a .348 attack percentage at Michigan and a .324 mark at Michigan State
  • Tallied 33 assists at Michigan and 36 assists at Michigan State in the Boilermakers’ pair of 3-0 victories
  • Tallied 10 total blocks and finished the week third in the conference with 1.67 blocks per set

Freshman of the Week:

• Mia Tuman, Ohio State
  • Fr. – Setter – Sewickley, Pa. – North Allegheny – Major: Exploration
  • Averaged 10.86 assists/set and 2.29 digs/set in the past weekend to conclude the Buckeyes’ season
  • In the 3-1 victory against Rutgers, Tuman totaled 54 assists, seven digs, two kills, and an ace
  • Nearly finished with a double-double in three sets at Penn State with 22 assists and nine digs
  • Finished her freshman season with 963 assists, ranking 16th overall in the Buckeye record book among career assist leaders
