Black Flag

Black Flag is a punk rock band that started in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. It was formed by Greg Ginn, who played guitar and wrote most of the band's songs. Black Flag is known for being one of the first hardcore punk bands and for helping to shape post-hardcore music.

They broke up in 1986 but got back together in 2003 and then again in 2013. During their second reunion, they released their first album in almost 30 years called "What The..." in 2013. In January 2019, they announced their third reunion.

Black Flag's music mixed the simple style of the Ramones with atonal guitar solos and changes in tempo. Their lyrics, mostly written by Ginn, talked about going against authority and not fitting in. They sang about feelings of being alone, dealing with problems, being poor, and feeling paranoid.

When Henry Rollins joined the band as the lead singer in 1981, the band explored these themes even more. Most of their music was released by Ginn's own record label called SST Records.

During the 1980s, Black Flag's music and their reputation changed. They were important in creating hardcore punk and had a big influence on punk music in the U.S. and other countries. They were among the first punk rock bands to mix heavy metal sounds into their music. They also used free jazz and classical music elements in their sound, especially in Ginn's guitar playing. Unlike other punk bands, they played longer and more complex songs.

Black Flag is respected in the punk world for promoting a do-it-yourself punk spirit. They were pioneers in creating their own record labels and promoting a punk lifestyle. They toured a lot in the U.S., Canada, and sometimes in Europe, which helped them build a dedicated group of fans.
