About Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a highly popular first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, and published by Activision. It was released worldwide on November 13, 2020, across multiple gaming platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

As the sixth installment in the Black Ops series and the seventeenth installment in the Call of Duty franchise as a whole, this game represents a collaboration between two well-known development studios.

The game's engaging campaign is set in the early 1980s, during the Cold War era, taking place between the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Players assume the role of "Bell," who is recruited by CIA officer Russell Adler to join a multinational task force dedicated to stopping a Soviet spy named Perseus. Perseus aims to undermine the United States and tip the scales in favor of the Soviet Union.

Throughout the campaign, players have the opportunity to encounter familiar characters from the Black Ops series, including Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson. The multiplayer mode introduces new game modes, map dynamics, and elements, expanding upon the design choices introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Black Ops Cold War also implements a seasonal content system akin to Modern Warfare, featuring a battle pass and regular additions of free maps and weapons with each new season.

Originally, the game was being developed by Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games as a standalone title, separate from the Black Ops subseries. However, due to development disagreements between the two teams, Treyarch took over the project in 2019, with Raven joining as co-developers.

The marketing campaign for Black Ops Cold War kicked off in August 2020, employing various strategies such as sending slide projectors to content creators, engaging fans in online puzzle-solving activities, and featuring a website showcasing historical Cold War events. In October 2020, a public multiplayer beta was also made available, allowing players to get a taste of the game before its official release.

Critics generally received Black Ops Cold War favorably, praising its campaign, multiplayer mode, and zombie experience. However, the game did face some criticism for technical issues and a perceived lack of innovation. Nevertheless, it achieved remarkable commercial success, becoming the best-selling game of 2020 in the United States.

Black Ops Cold War Gameplay

In the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War campaign, players have the opportunity to create a customized character, referred to as "Bell." They can choose their intelligence agency, skin tone, nationality, and gender, as well as select different personality traits that offer in-game perks. This installment of the game reintroduces the feature of multiple endings, which are determined by the choices players make throughout the campaign.

Multiplayer:

Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer mode introduces a mix of new and familiar game modes, accompanied by maps designed for both the traditional 6v6 format and larger 12v12 battles. Additionally, a new game mode called "Fireteam" is introduced, allowing for intense combat with up to 40 players. The game retains the Create-a-Class system from Modern Warfare, with a few notable changes. Field upgrades are now included as part of class loadouts, and players can choose one wildcard out of four options: Gunfighter (enabling up to 8 primary weapon attachments), Perk Greed (allowing 2 perks from each category for a total of 6 usable perks), Danger Close (double grenade equipment), or Lawbreaker (permitting mixing and matching of any weapon/perk type in any slot). Similar to Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War supports cross-platform play and cross-platform progression. A subsequent update integrates the multiplayer progression system with Call of Duty: Warzone, resulting in a unified level system across Cold War, Warzone, and Modern Warfare. Additionally, Operator characters and weapons from Cold War are incorporated into Warzone alongside Modern Warfare's Operators and weapons, although the multiplayer modes remain separate and do not share Operators and weapons.

Zombies:

The Zombies mode in Black Ops Cold War presents a new storyline called "Dark Aether," which expands upon the original Aether story concluded in Black Ops 4 while staying connected to the main campaign narrative. Instead of playing as pre-defined characters, players assume the roles of Operator characters from Multiplayer as part of a CIA response team known as "Requiem." Progression from Multiplayer carries over to Zombies, allowing players to utilize any weapon to start a Zombies match, along with Gunsmith, scorestreaks, and field upgrades. Familiar mechanics such as wall buys, the Mystery Box, Pack-a-Punch, and beloved Perks from previous games return. For the first time in Zombies, players have the option to "exfil" the map, entering a challenging wave with increased enemy spawns that they must survive before they can escape. Collectible intel items are scattered throughout the playable maps, enabling players to uncover and follow the main story as they progress. The game incorporates a skill upgrade system, where players can enhance weapons, perks, ammo mods, and field upgrades using Aetherium Crystals, a currency obtained by reaching specific rounds. The exclusive Onslaught mode was introduced for PlayStation players until November 1, 2021. In this mode, played within Multiplayer maps, up to 2 players defend areas enclosed by the Dark Aether orb, which requires zombie kills to power. Sufficient kills move the orb to new positions, forcing players to relocate or face death outside the orb's protective zone. The Season Two update introduces "Outbreak," a large-scale mode where players combat hordes of zombies and complete objectives in an open-world area, featuring locations from the larger Multiplayer modes.

Black Ops Cold War Plot

In the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War universe, the campaign is set in the early 1980s during the Cold War era. Players follow the story of Russell Adler, a Green Beret turned CIA SAD/SOG officer, as he leads a mission to thwart an international espionage threat known as Perseus.

The campaign draws inspiration from real events and takes players to various locations such as East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, and the Soviet KGB headquarters. Adler is joined by familiar Black Ops characters including Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Jason Hudson, as well as new allies like Lawrence Sims, Eleazar "Lazar" Azoulay, and Helen Park. Players assume the role of "Bell," a mysterious operative who assists Adler's team throughout most of the campaign.

Mason and Belikov also become playable in certain sections. Perseus' inner circle includes notable figures such as Arash Kadivar, Qasim Javadi, Anton Volkov, Major Vadim Rudnik, and Robert Aldrich. Imran Zakhaev and Colonel Lev Kravchenko also make appearances.

In the multiplayer mode, the seasonal story extends from late 1983 to 1984 and focuses on Adler's ongoing mission to investigate the resurgence of Perseus and his agents.

Captain Carver Butcher, a protagonist from the Call of Duty: Vanguard multiplayer seasonal story, also makes an appearance in the final Cold War multiplayer season.

The Zombies mode, set from late 1983 to 1985 in the Dark Aether story, continues the narrative elements from the previous Aether storyline.
