Bob Cousy was born on August 9, 1928, in New York City. He grew up in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens and attended Andrew Jackson High School. Cousy played college basketball at the College of the Holy Cross from 1946 to 1950, where he was a two-time All-American and led the Crusaders to the NCAA Championship game in 1948.
After graduating from Holy Cross, Cousy was drafted by the Tri-Cities Blackhawks (now the Atlanta Hawks) in the 1950 NBA draft. He played one season with the Blackhawks before being traded to the Boston Celtics in 1950. Cousy played for the Celtics from 1950 to 1963 and was the team's captain from 1951 to 1963.
Cousy was a 13-time NBA All-Star and won six NBA championships with the Celtics. He was also named the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1957 and was a 12-time All-NBA First Team selection. Cousy was known for his flashy ball-handling skills and is credited with popularizing the behind-the-back dribble.
