Bone Tomahawk is a horror film set in the American West, released in 2015. It marks the directorial debut of S. The idea for the film originated when Zahler's friend and manager, Dallas Sonnier, suggested adapting Zahler's Western novel, Wraiths of a Broken Land, into a movie. However, due to budget constraints, Zahler decided to write a rescue Western instead.
Casting began in October 2014, with Peter Sarsgaard, Timothy Olyphant, and Jennifer Carpenter initially signed on but later replaced by Wilson, Fox, and Simmons respectively due to scheduling conflicts. Principal photography occurred in California over a 21-day period in October 2014.
Bone Tomahawk premiered at Fantastic Fest on October 1, 2015. RLJ Entertainment released the film in a limited capacity on October 23, earning over $480,000 in theater sales and $4.32 million in home media sales. Made with a budget of $1.8 million, the movie received predominantly positive reviews. Zahler's screenplay and direction, as well as the performances of the ensemble cast, garnered particular acclaim. Over time, Bone Tomahawk has achieved cult classic status.
Bone Tomahawk Ending Explained
In their rescue attempt, the group manages to kill three of the captors. However, Brooder loses his life, while Hunt and Chicory are captured and imprisoned by the Troglodytes. Inside their prison, Hunt and Chicory discover Samantha and Nick in a separate cell, but unfortunately, they also learn that the Troglodytes have already killed and cannibalized Purvis.
Tragically, Nick suffers a gruesome fate as he is stripped, brutally scalped, bisected while still alive, and ultimately consumed by the Troglodytes. In a desperate move, Hunt tricks several of the Troglodytes into consuming liquor laced with opium tincture. One dies from the poisoning, and another falls unconscious as a result.
Arthur, who has been following the group's trail, eventually stumbles upon the valley where the Troglodytes reside. He manages to kill two of them and discovers their use of an animal bone whistle for communication. Blowing on the whistle, Arthur lures another Troglodyte towards him and swiftly eliminates him as well.
Inside the depths of the cave, the Troglodyte leader becomes enraged by the effects of the poisoning. In a brutal act, the Troglodytes cut open Hunt's abdomen, insert a heated opium flask into the wound, and shoot him. Just in time, Arthur arrives, eliminating the leader and freeing Samantha and Chicory from their captivity.
Despite being mortally wounded, Hunt decides to stay behind with a rifle. His intention is to kill any surviving Troglodytes when they return, ensuring that they won't be able to terrorize the town of Bright Hope any further. As the remaining three members of the group leave the cave, they encounter two pregnant Troglodyte women. These women have been horrifically mutilated, with their limbs amputated and stakes driven into their eyes, leaving them blinded.
Once the group has distanced themselves from the valley, Arthur blows on the Troglodyte whistle, but there is no response. Moments later, they hear three gunshots in the distance.

In the 1890s, Purvis and Buddy, two brigands, stumble upon a Native American burial site. They are suddenly attacked, resulting in Buddy's death, while Purvis manages to escape. Seeking refuge, Purvis arrives in the nearby town of Bright Hope, where he discreetly buries his stolen loot. Deputy Chicory witnesses this act and reports it to Sheriff Franklin Hunt, who confronts Purvis.
When Purvis attempts to flee, Sheriff Hunt shoots him in the leg. Wanting to bring medical assistance to Purvis, Hunt dispatches the skilled gunslinger John Brooder to fetch the town's doctor. However, instead of finding the doctor, Brooder encounters Samantha O'Dwyer, the doctor's assistant and the wife of the injured Arthur O'Dwyer. Hunt leaves Samantha with his other deputy, Nick, to care for Purvis in the sheriff's office. That night, a stable boy in the town is murdered.
Upon discovering the gruesome murder, Sheriff Hunt returns to his office, only to find it empty, save for an arrow left behind. The Professor, a knowledgeable Native American, identifies the arrow as belonging to a tribe known as the "Troglodytes" and helps locate their valley on a map.
The Professor warns Hunt that the Troglodytes are an inbred, cannibalistic group shunned by other native tribes. Convinced that Samantha, Nick, and Purvis have been captured by the Troglodytes, Hunt assembles a rescue party consisting of Chicory, Brooder, and Arthur, despite his own injuries.
After several days of travel, the rescue party's camp is stumbled upon by two strangers. Fearing they are scouts for a raid, Brooder kills them. The party establishes a new camp but is soon attacked by raiders who injure Brooder's horse and steal the rest.
In the ensuing chaos, Brooder and Arthur engage in a fight, exacerbating Arthur's leg wound. Chicory decides to stay behind to tend to Arthur's recovery while Hunt and Brooder continue on foot. Finally reaching the Troglodytes' valley, the rescue party finds themselves ambushed by the savage clan.
