Cake is a rock band from Sacramento, California. They have five members: John McCrea, who sings; Vince DiFiore, who plays the trumpet; Xan McCurdy, the guitarist; Daniel McCallum, the bassist; and Todd Roper, who plays the drums. The band is known for their singer's sarcastic lyrics and unique voice. They blend different music styles like country, disco, rock, funk, and hip-hop into their songs.
Cake started in 1991 with members John McCrea, Vince DiFiore, Greg Brown, Frank French, and Shon Meckfessel. Later, Gabe Nelson replaced Meckfessel. They released their first album, "Motorcade of Generosity," on their own before signing with Capricorn Records in 1995.
Their song "Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle" became popular, reaching number 35 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and appearing on MTV's 120 Minutes. After some changes in the band's lineup, they released their second album, "Fashion Nugget," in 1996, which became a big success with the hit single "The Distance."
