The chained movie ending explained

Chained, directed by Jennifer Lynch, is a highly violent film that relies on off-camera events to create an unnerving atmosphere of terror and suspense. The audience is constantly on edge, waiting for the next shocking revelation about the dark side of human nature. Although the film's ending may feel unsatisfying at first, a second viewing reveals clever foreshadowing and hints that elevate the film's dark comedy and hilariously psychotic moments. Chained is a worthy successor to Lynch's previous film, Surveillance, and its unapologetic portrayal of violence is sure to make viewers uncomfortable and possibly queasy.

Chained movie synopsis

The movie plot follows Sarah Fittler and her son who take a taxi ride back home from a cinema but get kidnapped by the driver, Bob, and brought to his house. Bob, a serial killer who has a history of abusing his father and brother, rapes and murders young women. He kills Sarah and keeps her son, whom he names Rabbit, as a prisoner. Rabbit tries to escape but Bob chains him to a wall.

Years later, Rabbit, now a teenager, is still in Bob's home doing chores and burying Bob's victims. Bob tries to become a father figure to Rabbit and teaches him human anatomy, revealing that Rabbit's father Brad has remarried to convince Rabbit that nobody cares for him. Bob intends to turn Rabbit into a serial killer like him by bringing him closer and having him pick a victim.

Rabbit initially refuses, but when Bob forces him to choose, he selects a girl named Angie. Bob abducts her and leaves Rabbit and Angie in a room. Bob warns Rabbit that he will kill Angie if Rabbit doesn't. Rabbit hesitates and starts to bond with Angie, but stabs her in the stomach when Bob barges in. The rabbit then drags her body to the room containing the corpses of past victims. Bob agrees to Rabbit's request to hunt for another girl, but Rabbit declines all suggested victims.

During the drive, Bob discovers that Rabbit has written the word "help" on the cab's side. Bob realizes that Rabbit stabbed Angie in a non-lethal spot using his anatomy knowledge. He knocks Rabbit unconscious and enters the room where Angie is hiding to kill her. Angie manages to cut Bob's Achilles tendon while Rabbit awakens and saves her. Rabbit kills Bob in the ensuing struggle and buries him next to his victims.

Rabbit tracks down his father Brad, now living with his new wife Marie and Rabbit's half-brother Colin. Brad had arranged the abduction of Rabbit and his mother, wanting to get rid of his first wife and son. Rabbit confronts Brad with this revelation and beats him to death. Marie calls the police and reports that a burglar killed her husband. Rabbit returns to Bob's house and shuts the garage door as the closing credits roll.
