Notably, during the 2009–10 NHL season, when he was called up from the AHL's Chicago Wolves to join the Thrashers, Chelios held the title of the oldest active player in the NHL and the second oldest in NHL history. 

At that point, he had played the most games of any active NHL player and was the last remaining player from the 1981 NHL Entry Draft still active, spanning drafts up to 1986. Additionally, he boasted the highest career penalty minutes among active players.
