Who Is Christy Dignam?

Christopher Dignam, the lead singer of the Aslan band, was born at Holle's street Hospital in Dublin on the 23rd of May, 1960. The singer grew up in the north of  Dublin in the suburb of Finglas. He studied the fine classical art of bel canto at the Bel Canto House School of Singing in Dublin. A traumatizing childhood incident for Christy was that at the age of 6, he was raped by a neighbor, and it was recurring for three whole years until he turned 9. Christy asked for help from his friend's brother, who was in his twenties. The best friend's brother, upon hearing everything that Christy had been through, raped him again. Christy later suggested that his drug abuse came from these traumatic events.

The singer's family gave fans a health update on Christy on Monday. The family statement read that Christry & Kathryn Dignam and their family, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, are sharing an update on Christy's health since multiple media houses have contacted them for a comment. 

"In July 2022, Christy was admitted to Beaumont Hospital and spent the next six months in the care of the Hematology and Cardiac Care team. Since December, Christy has been at home and is being cared for lovingly by family, with the support of a palliative care team. The Dignam family thanks everyone for keeping Christy in their thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time."

Is Christy Dignam Sick?

According to his family, Aslan's lead singer Christy Dignam is cared for at home by a palliative care team. Dignam was diagnosed with Amyloidosis, a rare blood disorder, in March 2013 and had been battling it since. Last September, Aslan was forced to cancel their sold-out show at Dublin's 3 Arena due to a setback with his ongoing medical treatment. According to the Dignam family, the 62-year-old singer was admitted to Beaumont Hospital in July 2022 and spent six months under the care of the Haematology and Cardiac Care teams.

What happened To Christy Dignam?

Dignam has been battling Amyloidosis, an incurable blood cancer, since 2013 but has managed to keep the illness at bay long enough to continue performing with Aslan.

Concerns about the singer's health grew when the Dublin band was forced to postpone their 3Arena concert in September 2022 to mark their 40th anniversary in the industry.

The group's anniversary show in the capital was set to be the biggest of their career.

Does Christy Dignam Still Have Cancer?

In 2013 Christy was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called Amyloidosis. Since then, he has had 4 different types of chemos done. After one chemo, cancer becomes immune to it, and you have to try different types of chemo to ensure the treatment is working. 

Amyloidosis is a rare disease in which an amyloid protein accumulates in organs. This amyloid buildup can cause organs to malfunction.

Dignam explained his condition and how it has affected his health to RSVP Live in 2021: "I have Amyloidosis and multiple myeloma, they are two blood cancers but very similar. It's a terminal illness, there's no cure for it."

Towards the end of the interview, he mentioned that he was terrified of dying from cancer he had been battling for over a decade.

Who Is Christy Dignam's Wife?

Dignam has been married to his wife Kathryn for over 37 years and has a daughter, Kiera, who is also a singer. He has two grandchildren, Cian and Jake, as well as a granddaughter, Ava. In his autobiography 'My Crazy World,' published worldwide by Simon And Schuster in September 2019, he deals with the intersections of his personal and professional lives. His wife Kathryn has stood by him through out all his fights with drug abuse but she made sure their daughter was not a victim of it.
