As they awaken and step off their spots, they are systematically killed by a machine at the center of the room. Amid their fear and confusion, the group gradually comes to the realization that they must decide who among them will be sacrificed in order for the rest to survive.

"The Dead are Voted For" is a strategy that the group tries, but there is at least one person who votes for someone alive, which could be a mistake or a disbelief in the idea of voting for the dead. Another strategy that the group tries is to not vote at all, which results in a tie, but someone is killed at random due to a panic vote. The "Minority: Old Die First" strategy is proposed by a young man, who suggests voting out the old people first who are due for death by age, but he doesn't keep his word, and his next target becomes a lady in her 50s, a cancer survivor. The "Information is Wealth" strategy is attempted by a guy named Eric, who provides false information about his abduction, and another old guy tries to do the same but gets caught on his bluff. The "Judging a Book by its Cover" strategy is implemented, but the lady who goes first presents herself unimpressively, and some members judge her unworthy of life. The "Family Virtues" strategy is proposed by a guy named Craig, who lies that his wife is next to him, and the group should spare his wife and kill him instead. The "Minority: Illegal Immigrant" strategy is executed when someone turns on a Mexican in the room, stating that he is illegally in the USA. The "Bad: Domestic Abuse" strategy is called out by a cop who identifies a guy, Raul, who beat up his girlfriend in an earlier case. The "Minority: Religion" strategy is enacted when an Islamic girl who hasn't spoken at all is the next one to go. The "Minority: Race / The Bad: Racist" strategy is initiated when a black man tries to play the race card and the cop displays a heavy tone of racism. The "Equal Votes. Perfect Alignment of Thoughts" strategy is suggested, but someone messes up, and there is a death. The "Moral Stand" strategy splits the group into two, with one set believing that they should leave it up to the last survivors to decide and the others believing that everyone is equal in the room and should have the same chance at life. The "Volunteering" strategy is called upon, and an aged man, lady, and a 16-year-old kid step out, killing themselves. The "Soldiers have Anyway Signed up to Die" strategy is contemplated, and the soldier clarifies that he has already fought for others in war and wants to go home to his family. The "Minority: Atheist" strategy is executed when an atheist states that if there was a God, then it was the machine in the middle. Finally, the "People with Kids" strategy is suggested, where people justify that the pregnant woman should die, and others suggest that they should kill either the kid or the girl to make things easy for the two.
