Cocaine Bear Reviews

The movie "Cocaine Bear," directed by Elizabeth Banks, is a black comedy that tells the story of a 175-pound black bear that overdosed on cocaine lost by drug traffickers in Tennessee in 1985. The film imagines a reality where doing that much blow would drive a bear to go on a murderous rampage rather than kill it. The movie quickly sets itself apart from many other comedic "cerebral" horror and thriller movies by spelling out and then relentlessly over-delivering on its ridiculous premise for an hour and a half.

Although the movie is fun, the same extra-ness that makes it work so well at first quickly becomes more than a bit too much as the movie keeps trying to up the ante when what it really needs is to slow down and chill out. Each of Cocaine Bear’s human characters has their reasons for wandering into the park, and they're aware of what sort of things they should be watching out for under normal circumstances. Still, for all their planning and vague knowledge of what to do when they encounter wild animals, none of them have any idea what to do once they start individually running into the female bear, whose main focuses throughout the film are frolicking, finding more coke, and tearing apart anything that gets in her way.

The movie's script quickly sets to bring more characters like park ranger Liz and animal conservationist Peter into the picture, and many characters end up dying in funny-ish ways that sort of underline how you're not meant to become all that involved in any of their individual lives. However, there are so many flatly characterized players running around in the woods waiting to get gobbled up that it becomes hard not to feel like Cocaine Bear’s an overlong SNL sketch in desperate need of a trim and a few rewrites.

To enjoy the movie, one must be in the right kind of headspace and have a high tolerance for pure, uncut ridiculousness. Despite its flaws, the film is not without its charms, and both Convery and Martindale deliver exceptionally delightful performances that reinforce how just a little bit more substance for other characters could have done wonders to make them all more memorable.

Where Was Cocaine Bear Movie Filmed?

The recently released comedy-thriller-action film, Cocaine Bear, directed by Elizabeth Banks, tells the story of a 500-pound black bear that ingests a couple of kilos of cocaine, based on a true 1985 story. While authorities did find a black bear in Georgia's Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest that had eaten a copious amount of white powder, the part about the bear going on a murderous rampage is not based on fact. The film stars Keri Russell, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Margo Martindale, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and the late Ray Liotta in one of his final performances.

Although the events of the film are fictional, the true story serves as the inspiration for the movie's plot. In the film, Ray Liotta plays a drug smuggler who is in search of a large amount of cocaine that was supposed to be dropped from a passing airplane to a specific location for pick up in the forest of northern Georgia, close to the Tennessee state line. The authorities later found 40 open containers of cocaine that were estimated to be several million dollars worth of the drug. They also found the bear in close proximity to the container, which had died from an overdose after ingesting so much of the drug.

The actual locations used for filming the movie, however, are about as far away from Georgia as you can get. Principal photography for the film took place in August and September of 2021 in County Wicklow, Ireland, a grassy and mountainous region of the Emerald Isle that has become a favorite location for filmmakers worldwide due to its proximity to Dublin and its scenic views. The county's lush forests, the 400-foot tall Powerscourt Waterfalls, and the Avoca Mines have also been used in films such as Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, Braveheart, and last year's Disenchanted.

In an interview, Elizabeth Banks expressed her love for filming in such a beautiful location, stating that she lived in Dalkey, which was gorgeous and that her kids enjoyed taking sailing lessons at Dublin Harbour and going kayaking. Wicklow County's allure has drawn so many projects not only because of its beautiful spots for shooting but also because it makes for a great getaway with all manner of activities to fill in the gaps when not filming a coked-up bear wreaking havoc on an innocent group of sightseers!

According to Rotten Tomatoes, 70% of 197 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.2/10. Metacritic assigned the film a score of 54 out of 100 based on 55 critics, indicating mixed or average reviews. CBC.ca's Eli Glasner wrote that the movie failed to live up to the buzz and that there is a significant gap between what audiences want the movie to be and what it actually delivers.
