What is College Baseball all About?

College baseball is a version of baseball that is played at institutions of higher education on an intercollegiate level. Compared to football and basketball, college baseball plays a lesser role in developing professional players as baseball's minor leagues have a long history of supplying players to Major League Baseball (MLB). Unlike football or basketball, it's more common for baseball players to move directly from high school to the professional level. However, if baseball players decide to enroll in a four-year college, they need to complete at least three years to regain professional eligibility, unless they reach the age of 21 before starting their third year.

College Baseball Official Rules

College baseball follows rules similar to the Official Baseball Rules, with a few exceptions. These include:

  • Bats may be made of wood or a composite material that meets NCAA standards, and composite bats must pass the BBCOR test.
  • The designated hitter rule is used, and a player can serve as both pitcher and DH simultaneously and remain in one position if removed from the other.
  • Doubleheaders may have one or both ends that are seven innings long, although the NCAA encourages schools to play as many nine-inning games as possible. Seven-inning games may be played on the final day of a conference series or to make up games that were postponed earlier in the year due to weather.
  • A mercy rule may be in effect, which ends play when one team is ahead by 10 or more runs after seven innings (or 6.5 innings if the home team is winning). This rule may not be used in NCAA tournament games, but some conferences institute it on Sundays or the final day of a conference series to allow for early travel. In some conferences, it may also be used to end games early and start the next tournament game sooner.
  • A player is automatically ejected for maliciously running into a defender trying to tag a runner or execute a force out. An automatic double play may also be called if a player slides into a base with the intent to take out the defensive player.
  • Instant replay may be used to determine if a slide was malicious in televised or tournament games.
