He discovered his passion for music at the age of 12 and later attended Carnegie Mellon University with plans to study finance and play football. Before forming Dan + Shay, Smyers was part of an emo band called Transition, which toured and released music. He is talented in vocals, guitar, bass, and piano. In 2016, Smyers got engaged to Abby Law, and they tied the knot in 2017. They share a passion for rescuing dogs and have five dogs together as of March 2021.
