What is Dead Island Riptide?

Dead Island: Riptide is a famous action role-playing game released in April 2013 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Techland developed and Deep Silver published Dead Island: Riptide. It serves as a continuation of the story from 2011's Dead Island, with the original four survivors and a new one landing on another island in the Banoi archipelago, which is also infested with zombies. The game received mixed reviews from critics, who noted that it failed to address the issues of its predecessor or introduce any innovative gameplay mechanics.

Here's a general walkthrough of the main story missions in Dead Island Riptide:

Chapter 1: Paradise Meets Hell

• After the game's opening cutscene, you'll find yourself in a beach camp. Speak to your fellow survivors, including the returning characters from the first game, and take on some side quests if you want.
• Your main objective is to investigate a nearby military base, so follow the marker on your map to the base entrance.
• Once inside the base, make your way to the command center and activate the radar dish.
• Defend the command center from waves of zombies until the dish is repaired and you receive a distress signal from a nearby ship.

Chapter 2: Rescue

• Follow the marker to the ship and board it.
• Explore the ship and rescue the survivors trapped inside, including a doctor who will join your group.
• Make your way to the bridge and contact a military rescue team, but be prepared to defend the ship from a zombie attack.
• Once the rescue team arrives, they'll inform you that they need to secure the island before they can extract you. Your group must now work with the military to clear out the zombie-infested areas.

Chapter 3: The Ritual

• The military will task you with finding a man named Kessler, who can help them with their mission.
• Follow the marker to Kessler's location and fight your way through the zombies.
• Kessler will inform you that you need to perform a ritual to appease the local population and gain their support.
• Follow Kessler's instructions to find the items you need for the ritual, and defend the area from zombies while the ritual is performed.

Chapter 4: Broadcast

• The next objective is to contact the outside world and request help.
• Follow the marker to a radio station and clear out the zombies inside.
• Activate the transmitter and defend the station from waves of zombies until the message is broadcasted.
• The military will now ask you to retrieve a serum that can cure the virus, which is located in a laboratory on the island.

Chapter 5: The Laboratory

• Follow the marker to the laboratory and fight your way through the zombies inside.
• Retrieve the serum and bring it back to the military base, but be prepared for a surprise attack on the way back.
• Once you return to the base, the military will betray you and attempt to take the serum for themselves.
• Defend yourself and the serum from the military and escape the base.

Chapter 6: The Way Out

• With the military turned against you, your group must now find a way off the island on your own.
• Follow the marker to a nearby dock and find a boat to escape.
• Defend the dock from waves of zombies and a boss zombie before you can escape on the boat.
• Enjoy the game's ending cutscene.

Dead Island Riptide Ending

As the game draws to a close, growling can be heard emanating from inside the boat, and the doorknob to the hold is turned open from within before the game comes to an abrupt end. The ultimate outcomes for the immune character and the five other survivors remain uncertain. Prior to this, the immune and their companions come across a boat, where they encounter Serpo once again. He openly confesses to engineering the viral outbreaks but proposes to provide the immune with medical aid in exchange for accompanying him. The immune decides to abandon Serpo to the zombies and escape the island with their five fellow survivors. After six days, their boat washes ashore on another island that appears to be deserted.

Dead Island Riptide Review

Dead Island: Riptide was met with mixed reviews, with some critics applauding the new setting and gameplay while pointing out the numerous unresolved issues that plagued the original game and the dearth of innovative content. On Metacritic, a review aggregator website, the PlayStation 3 version received a score of 62/100, the PC version received 61/100, and the Xbox 360 version received 57/100.

Greg Miller of IGN praised the game's gameplay and co-op mode, and its ability to import saved data from the original game, which ensured that enemies remained proportional to the player's level. However, Miller noted that the game's storyline and visuals were subpar, and it failed to address most of the issues that plagued its predecessor. Despite its shortcomings, Miller rated the game 7.2 out of 10.

On the other hand, Mark Walton of GameSpot was highly critical of Dead Island: Riptide. He described the game as a frustrating mess of repetitive combat and half-baked ideas, despite its initial promise. Walton awarded the game a dismal score of 4 out of 10. 

When Did Dead Island Riptide Come Out?

In 2019, the responsibility for the development of Dead Island 2 was transferred once again to Dambuster Studios, an internal studio of Deep Silver. As of April 21, 2023, the game is slated for release. In this game, Riptide is set right after the conclusion of Dead Island, featuring the four immune survivors - ex-American footballer Logan Carter, rapper Sam B, undercover Chinese spy Xian Mei, and former Australian police officer Purna Jackson. In addition to them, the game also includes international terrorists Charon and Yerema, a native who is the asymptomatic patient zero of the Banoi outbreak. The group manages to flee from the prison island and lands on a military ship.
