Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry is a video game series about a guy named Dante who fights demons to protect the Earth. The games focus on exciting battles where you control Dante and perform cool moves to defeat enemies without getting hurt. How well you fight, how fast you do it, and the things you collect affect how good you are at the game.

The person who came up with Devil May Cry initially wanted to make a different game called Resident Evil 4, but Capcom, the company behind it, thought it was too different for Resident Evil. So, they turned it into its own game. The games were directed by Hideaki Itsuno and written by Bingo Morihashi.

There was a game called DmC: Devil May Cry that was made by a different team called Ninja Theory but supervised by Capcom. They also remastered the first three games to make them look better on newer consoles.

The newest game in the series is called Devil May Cry 5, which came out in 2019. The games have been really popular, selling a lot of copies worldwide and winning awards from Capcom for their success. Because of how well they've done, the series has inspired comic books, novels, animated shows, guides, toys, and action figures.

Devil May Cry Plot

The Devil May Cry series revolves around Dante, a demon hunter with special abilities. It all starts with his father, Sparda, a powerful demon who saved the human world from a demon invasion. Sparda seals gates to the demon world with the help of a human priestess and has twin sons, Dante and Vergil.

In Devil May Cry 3, Dante battles his brother Vergil, who wants to open a portal to the demon world. They defeat a manipulative villain and, as the portal closes, Vergil enters the demon world.

In the first Devil May Cry game, Dante fights demons on Mallet Island to stop the demon lord Mundus from returning. He's helped by Trish, who looks like Dante's mother. They defeat Mundus, and Dante starts a demon-hunting business called Devil Never Cry.

In the Devil May Cry anime, Dante protects a young girl named Patty targeted by demons. Alongside Trish and Lady, they stop a demon's plan to gain immense power.

In Devil May Cry 2, Dante helps Lucia stop Arius, who wants to summon a powerful demon. Lucia, who Arius created, teams up with Dante to prevent this catastrophe.

Devil May Cry 4 introduces Nero, who discovers a corrupt religious group's plot. He clashes with Dante before realizing they're on the same side. They stop the group's leader, Sanctus, from using demonic power.

In Devil May Cry 5, several years later, Nero, now running Dante's business, faces a powerful new enemy with the help of Dante and a new character, V.

The timeline originally placed Devil May Cry 4 before Devil May Cry 2, but Devil May Cry 5 changed that. The game DmC: Devil May Cry, by a different team, isn't part of the main series but explores a different universe with a different-looking Dante and a more modern setting.

Devil May Cry History

Initially, after completing Resident Evil 2 in 1998, a team led by Hideki Kamiya started work on a PlayStation 2 game, which later became Devil May Cry. This game was quite different from the Resident Evil series, taking inspiration from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and Capcom's Strider franchise.

Devil May Cry's success didn't carry over to its sequel, which faced mixed reviews. This led Capcom to re-evaluate and create the next game more in line with the first one's success. Devil May Cry 3 was then made as a prequel to the series, exploring the past of the main characters.

Following the success of Devil May Cry 3, development for Devil May Cry 4 began. The team faced discussions about introducing a new protagonist but eventually settled on Nero, alongside the returning character Dante. However, there was a consideration of rebooting the series due to other games having better sales.

Ninja Theory, known for their work on Heavenly Sword, was chosen to create a reboot titled DmC: Devil May Cry. Although it stirred some controversy among fans, it achieved decent sales. Meanwhile, Capcom expressed interest in a fifth installment of the original series.

In 2018, Devil May Cry 5 was confirmed at E3, featuring the return of Dante and Nero. The team working on Resident Evil 7 was heavily involved in its development, aiming to attract new players while satisfying longtime fans. The game aimed for challenging gameplay while introducing an "auto" mode for easier combos.

Hideki Kamiya also expressed interest in making a remake of the first Devil May Cry and a crossover game involving Dante and Bayonetta, adding to the series' potential future.

Throughout the series' history, various creative decisions, shifts in development teams, and attempts to balance fan expectations with new ideas shaped the direction of the Devil May Cry games.
