Doctor Sleep

Doctor Sleep is a 2019 supernatural horror film written and directed by Mike Flanagan, serving as a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980). Based on Stephen King's 2013 novel of the same name, which itself is a sequel to the original novel released in 1977, the film takes place many years after the events of its predecessor. Ewan McGregor stars as Dan Torrance, a man plagued by psychic abilities and haunted by the traumatic experiences he endured at the Overlook Hotel during his childhood. Alongside McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, and Cliff Curtis portray new characters who join forces with Dan to confront Rose the Hat and her group of followers.

The film adaptation of Doctor Sleep was developed by Warner Bros. Pictures shortly after the novel's publication in 2013. Although writer-producer Akiva Goldsman initially penned a script, the project did not secure a budget until the tremendous success of Warner Bros.' 2017 horror film, It, also based on a Stephen King novel. Subsequently, Mike Flanagan was brought on board to rewrite the script and helm the film. Flanagan aimed to reconcile the differences between the novel and the iconic Kubrick film adaptation of The Shining. Principal photography commenced in September 2018, primarily in Georgia, including Atlanta and the surrounding areas, and wrapped up in December of the same year.

Doctor Sleep had its world premiere at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on October 21, 2019, followed by a worldwide theatrical release on October 31, 2019, and a release in the United States on November 8. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise directed towards Flanagan's screenplay and the performances of the cast, notably McGregor, Ferguson, and Curran. However, some critics found fault with its lengthy runtime of two and a half hours. Despite grossing $72.3 million worldwide, Doctor Sleep's box office performance was considered somewhat underwhelming compared to other Stephen King adaptations released in 2019, such as It Chapter Two and Pet Sematary.

Doctor Sleep Ending Explained

In the climactic ending of Doctor Sleep, it is revealed that Dan, along with the Overlook Hotel, meets his demise. However, he continues to exist in a spiritual form and establishes a means of communication with Abra, similar to how Dick Hallorann guided him in the past. Dan becomes a guiding presence for Abra, urging her to embrace her Shine and confront the darkness that surrounds them.

As Abra's mother enters her room, she inquires about whom Abra was speaking with. Initially, Abra chooses to lie and claims she was talking to no one. However, she immediately follows Dan's advice and decides to be honest with her mother. Abra confesses to conversing with Dan and even mentions her ability to communicate with her late father.

In the final scene, it becomes apparent that the old lady from Room 237 managed to survive despite the hotel's fiery destruction. However, Abra, armed with the knowledge of the box trick, takes action. She enters the bathroom and locks up the old woman using her psychic abilities, effectively neutralizing the threat.

This concluding sequence showcases the transformation of Abra as she embraces her powers and demonstrates her ability to confront and overcome the lingering remnants of darkness. It signifies her growth and resilience in the face of supernatural challenges, leaving viewers with a sense of closure and satisfaction.

Doctor Sleep Plot

Dan Torrance, still haunted by the traumatic events at the Overlook Hotel in 1980, receives guidance from the ghost of Dick Hallorann. Together, they devise a plan to capture the lingering ghosts of the Overlook by containing them in lock boxes. Fast forward to 2011, Dan has turned to alcohol as a means to suppress his psychic abilities, known as the "shining." In a new New Hampshire town, he finds solace and recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous, organized by his newfound friend Billy Freeman. Dan becomes a hospice orderly, utilizing his shining to provide comfort to dying patients, earning the nickname "Doctor Sleep."

Meanwhile, a cult called the True Knot, led by Rose the Hat, survives by feeding on the "steam" released from individuals with the shining through torture and murder. In 2019, the True Knot is struggling to find enough steam, leading them to brutally kill a young boy. Abra Stone, a young girl with extraordinary shining, detects this horrifying act and telepathically contacts Dan for help. However, Rose senses Abra's presence and launches a psychic attack, but is met with a trap set by Abra, resulting in physical harm.

Rose orders the remaining members of the True Knot to capture Abra for her steam. Abra informs Dan about the True Knot, initially skeptical but eventually convinced to intervene. Dan enlists the help of Billy and Abra's father, Dave, to confront the cult. They successfully eliminate most of the True Knot, except for Rose. Tragically, Billy and Dave lose their lives in the process, and Abra is taken captive by Rose's accomplice, Crow Daddy. Using his shining, Dan enters Abra's mind, rescues her, and eliminates Crow Daddy.

Desperate to protect Abra, Dan brings her to the dormant Overlook Hotel, starting the boiler to reawaken its malevolent spirits. In a fierce battle, Rose overpowers Dan, but he unleashes the ghosts upon her. The spirits overwhelm and consume Rose before turning their attention to Dan, attempting to possess him and manipulate him into harming Abra. However, Abra manages to momentarily break through Dan's possession, urging him to save himself. Dan regains control and heads to the boiler room, preventing the hotel from overpowering him. As he loses consciousness, Dan experiences a vision of his mother, Wendy, comforting him during his childhood.

Abra escapes as the Overlook Hotel burns down and authorities arrive at the scene. Sometime later, Abra communicates with Dan's spirit, assuring him of her well-being. Dan provides comfort to Abra, encouraging her to embrace her shining abilities and not hide them from the world. Abra shares with her mother that she has been in contact with Dan and her deceased father, reassuring them that they are okay. In a final encounter, Abra confronts the ghost of Mrs. Massey in her bathtub, facing the entity with courage and closing the door behind her.
