Drama Desk Award Winners 2023

The winners of the 67th Annual Drama Desk Awards have been announced, showcasing the outstanding achievements in theater. Leading the pack with eight wins, including Outstanding Musical, is Some Like It Hot. Life of Pi, recognized in four categories, emerges as the most acclaimed play of the year, despite not being nominated for Outstanding Play. The honor for Outstanding Play went to Leopoldstadt, which received two awards overall.

The winners were disclosed through a press release on May 31, and a celebratory ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 6 at Sardi's Restaurant. The event will be hosted by Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody. Notably, this year's awards mark the Drama Desk's introduction of gender-neutral acting categories, resulting in twice as many nominees in each category. Two winners were selected per acting category.

Alongside the competitive awards, three non-competitive honors will be bestowed upon deserving individuals. Stephen McKinley Henderson, renowned for his recent performance in Between Riverside and Crazy on Broadway, will receive the esteemed Harold Prince Lifetime Achievement Award. It is worth noting that Henderson's portrayal in Riverside was ineligible for consideration, as he had previously received a Drama Desk nomination for his work in the play's 2015 Off-Broadway production.

The outstanding cast of Soho Rep's production "Public Obscenities" will be honored with the prestigious Ensemble Award. This talented group includes Tashnuva Anan, Abrar Haque, Golam Sarwar Harun, Gargi Mukherjee, NaFis, Jakeem Dante Powell, and Debashis Roy Chowdhury, who have collectively delivered a remarkable performance deserving of recognition.

Additionally, the esteemed Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award will be bestowed upon Ryan J. Haddad for his exceptional contributions to the productions "Dark Disabled Stories" and "American (tele)visions" during this theatrical season. Haddad's work in these productions has been truly remarkable, leaving a lasting impact on audiences and showcasing his immense talent and dedication.

The Drama Desk Awards celebrate excellence across Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway theater. This year's nominating committee consisted of Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Daniel Dinero, Peter Filichia, Kenji Fujishima, Margaret Hall, and Charles Wright.

Special Awards:
Harold Prince Lifetime Achievement Award
Stephen McKinley Henderson has been bringing in-depth, gripping portrayals of memorable characters to the stage for over four decades. With his return to Broadway this season as Pops in Between Riverside and Crazy, which the Drama Desk previously nominated in 2015, this year’s Harold Prince Lifetime Achievement Award marks Henderson’s role in this powerful production as a celebration of his brilliant career.

Ensemble Award
The cast of Soho Rep’s Public Obscenities—Tashnuva Anan, Abrar Haque, Golam Sarwar Harun, Gargi Mukherjee, NaFis, Jakeem Dante Powell, and Debashis Roy Chowdhury—embodied the transnational world of Shayok Misha Chowdhury’s bilingual play with memorable authenticity, remarkable specificity, and extraordinary warmth.

Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award
From his standout performance in American (tele)visions to writing and performing the autobiographical Dark Disabled Stories, Ryan J. Haddad’s work this season has expanded on and interrogated what the idea of “accessibility” really means. Whether riding a shopping cart like a throne, or relating his experiences on a “gay, pink bus,” Haddad shared with audiences an unabashed queer fabulosity that was both unforgettable and deeply human.
