Ending of Moon Explained

Sam2 places Sam1 inside the rover to avoid arousing suspicion from the "rescue" team, with the assistance of the kind-hearted AI, GERTY. GERTY requests Sam2 to reset its logs to conceal its clandestine activities. Meanwhile, GERTY prepares the next clone, Sam3, while Sam2 makes his escape. Sam1 manages to stay alive long enough to witness Sam2's pod departing for Earth. News reports inform us that Sam2 causes chaos upon reaching Earth, exposing the clone program and Lunar Industries' deceitful practices. The company appears to be severely impacted. However, the film does not reveal whether Sam2 will have a three-year lifespan on Earth before experiencing severe health issues and death, similar to other clones. Additionally, the fate of the remaining dormant clones on the Moon remains unknown.

Moon Plot

In the near future, Lunar Industries builds Sarang Station on the Moon's far side to mine helium-3, a valuable alternative fuel. The facility is highly automated, with only one human operator, Sam Bell, overseeing operations. As Sam nears the end of his three-year contract, he faces communication problems and receives sporadic messages from his wife Tess. His only companion is an AI named GERTY.

Two weeks before his return to Earth, Sam starts experiencing hallucinations and crashes his rover while recovering a helium-3 canister. After waking up in the base infirmary with no memory of the accident, Sam overhears GERTY communicating with Lunar Industries. The company orders Sam to stay on the base until a rescue team arrives to fix the harvester. Suspicious, Sam devises a plan to investigate and finds his unconscious doppelganger outside. Both Sams realize they are clones, with implanted memories and manipulated perceptions by GERTY.

They discover a communication substation interfering with their connection to Earth and uncover a vault filled with hibernating clones. Lunar Industries has been using clones to avoid expenses and prevent contact with Earth. The clones, unaware of their true fate, are incinerated at the end of their contracts. The older Sam attempts to contact Tess but instead speaks to their 15-year-old daughter, revealing that Tess has died. Upon returning, the older Sam starts deteriorating like previous clones.

Realizing the rescue team would kill them if found together, the newer Sam convinces GERTY to awaken another clone. They plan for the older Sam to sacrifice himself by returning to the crashed rover, while the newer Sam escapes to Earth. The newer Sam erases GERTY's records, sabotages the jamming antenna, and takes a canister of helium-3 for funds. The older Sam watches the launch of the transport carrying the newer Sam. The rescue team is fooled by the awakened clone and the older Sam's apparent death.

The transport reaches Earth, and news reports reveal Sam's testimony, exposing Lunar Industries' unethical practices and causing a major controversy. The company's stock plummets as a result.
