Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Plot

Following a heated argument, Joel Barish discovers that his girlfriend, Clementine Kruczynski, has undergone a procedure at the Lacuna company to erase her memories of him. Devastated by this revelation, Joel decides to undergo the same memory erasure process. Before the procedure, he records a heartfelt tape for Clementine, recounting his recollections of their tumultuous relationship.

While Joel sleeps in his apartment, the Lacuna employees work on his brain to wipe away his memories. One of the employees, Patrick, takes the opportunity to pursue a romantic relationship with Clementine, using Joel's and Clementine's shared memories as a guide. Meanwhile, technician Stan and secretary Mary indulge in a night of partying and intimacy.

As the memory erasure procedure takes place, Joel relives his memories of Clementine, starting from their final argument. As he moves backward in time, he realizes that he doesn't want to forget her. A manifestation of Clementine within his mind suggests that he hides her in memories where she doesn't belong, effectively halting the erasure.

However, Stan contacts his boss, Howard, who intervenes and restarts the procedure. Joel reaches his last remaining memory of Clementine: the day they met on a beach in Montauk. As the memory crumbles, Clementine urges Joel to meet her in Montauk. In Joel's apartment, while Stan is away, Mary confesses her love for Howard, and they share a kiss.

However, Howard's wife arrives and catches them in the act through the window. Enraged, she demands that Howard reveal the truth: that he and Mary had an affair and that Mary had her memories erased. Disgusted by the revelation, Mary steals the Lacuna records and sends them to the patients, including Joel and Clementine.

Joel wakes up with his memories of Clementine erased. Acting on impulse, he travels to Montauk and encounters Clementine on the train ride back. There is an undeniable connection between them, and they embark on a date at the frozen Charles River in Boston. Joel drives Clementine home, and Patrick witnesses their reunion, realizing that they have rediscovered each other.

Joel and Clementine receive their Lacuna records and listen to the tapes, discovering the bitter memories they had of one another. They contemplate separating once again but ultimately decide to give their relationship another chance.
