Following the tradition of its predecessors, the expansion features Naoki Yoshida as the director and producer, ensuring a continuation of the game's high-quality experience. The soundtrack for Endwalker was composed by Masayoshi Soken, adding a captivating musical backdrop to the gameplay.

Endwalker was released as a standalone expansion pack, catering to existing players of the game. However, Square Enix also updated the "Complete Edition" to include all expansions, including Endwalker, making it an attractive option for new players as well. This comprehensive edition was originally launched with Heavensward, a previous expansion pack.

FFXIV Main Scenario Quests

Main Scenario Quests (MSQ) serve as the primary storyline in Final Fantasy XIV, guiding players through the game's main narrative. These quests are notable for their inclusion of cutscenes and voice acting, providing an immersive storytelling experience. Moreover, completing MSQs unlocks significant features within the game, such as access to airship travel, entry into Grand Companies, the acquisition of a personal chocobo mount, the exploration of new cities, overworld zones, and the opportunity to engage in dungeons and trials.

Initially, the Main Scenario Quests in Final Fantasy XIV vary depending on the player's chosen starting city: Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, or Ul'dah. However, these distinct storylines eventually merge at the quest "Main Scenario Quest: It's Probably Pirates," establishing a unified narrative that continues throughout the game.

As new expansions are introduced, the Main Scenario Quests briefly branch off into two shorter quest chains, acquainting players with different characters and locations specific to the expansion. However, these quest chains eventually converge, ensuring that players experience the cohesive main story regardless of their chosen path. This approach provides a dynamic and diverse narrative experience while maintaining a consistent overarching storyline.

Chronologically, the Main Scenario Quests are divided as follows:

  • Seventh Umbral Era Quests – Level 1-50 story quests released in Patch 2.0 as part of the base game A Realm Reborn.

  • Seventh Astral Era Quests – Level 50 story quests that continue the A Realm Reborn story in Patches 2.1-2.55.

  • Heavensward Main Scenario Quests – Level 50-60 story quests released in Patch 3.0 with the expansion Heavensward.

  • Post-Heavensward Main Scenario Quests – Level 60 story quests that continue the Heavensward story in Patches 3.1-3.56.

  • Stormblood Main Scenario Quests – Level 60-70 story quests released in Patch 4.0 with the expansion Stormblood.

  • Post-Stormblood Main Scenario Quests – Level 70 story quests that continue the Stormblood story in Patches 4.1-4.56.

  • Shadowbringers Main Scenario Quests – Level 70-80 story quests released in Patch 5.0 with the expansion Shadowbringers.

  • Post-Shadowbringers Main Scenario Quests - Level 80 story quests that continue the Shadowbringers story in Patches 5.1-5.55.

  • Endwalker Main Scenario Quests – Level 80-90 story quests released in Patch 6.0 with the expansion Endwalker.

  • Post-Endwalker Main Scenario Quests - Level 90 story quests that continue the Endwalker story in Patches 6.1-6.5. This is the current ongoing set of quests.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker Gameplay

The gameplay and quest structure in Endwalker closely resemble those of the base game. Like many other MMORPGs, players engage with each other in a persistent world that reacts to their actions. To address issues related to numerical values, such as overflowing errors caused by excessively large enemy health pools, Endwalker introduces a numerical down-scaling, often referred to as a "stat squish" by MMO players. This ensures a balanced experience.

Endwalker introduces two new jobs. The first is the Sage, a healer class that utilizes magical objects called Nouliths, inspired by Funnels from the Gundam franchise. Sages direct aetheric energy to create barriers and enhance their offensive capabilities. The second new job is the Reaper, an armored melee fighter wielding a scythe.

Reapers can summon avatars from the void to gain increased power. Numerous other jobs receive updates and changes, including a complete rework of the Summoner job, significant enhancements to the Monk job, and the introduction of new abilities for various other jobs.

The expansion also brings a comprehensive overhaul of the player versus player (PvP) system. PvP abilities for all jobs undergo complete reworks to streamline the experience. Additionally, a new "small-scale" PvP mode called Crystalline Conflict is introduced, while the previous "Feast" mode is retired. Rewards previously exclusive to the Feast are now obtainable by participating in Crystalline Conflict.

Estinien, a character who became an ally during the events leading up to Endwalker, can now be chosen as a companion through the Trust system introduced in Shadowbringers. A subsequent update allows players to utilize the Trust system in A Realm Reborn and Heavensward dungeons, with plans to include Stormblood dungeons as well. This allows players to enjoy the Main Story Quest as a predominantly single-player experience.

Following the expansion's launch, additional content is introduced, including the Myths of the Realm raid series, which delves into the myths and legends surrounding the deities worshipped in Eorzea. Another raid series called Pandæmonium focuses on a mysterious location tied to a previous antagonist, Lahabrea.

Similar to changes made in Shadowbringers, certain Main Story quests undergo alterations, such as replacing the trial "Cape Westwind" with a single-player instance and restructuring the dungeons "Castrum Meridianum" and "The Praetorium" to streamline their progression. Patch 6.2 of Endwalker introduces the Island Sanctuary, a farming simulation mode where players can cultivate a garden on a deserted island, raise livestock, and interact with pets.

The Island Sanctuary offers a "slow life" experience, providing a relaxing solo activity without the pressures of competition. Additional updates include changes to Main Story quests, such as replacing the trial "The Steps of Faith" with a single-player instance and modifying boss mechanics in early dungeons like "The Aery."

Endwalker expands player housing with the introduction of a new housing area called the Empyreum in the city-state of Ishgard. To address concerns about housing availability, a lottery-based method for acquiring a house is implemented. More wards are assigned to player guilds known as Free Companies to improve access to housing.

Patch 6.18 expands the World Visit system, allowing players to travel to other data centers within their region, significantly increasing opportunities for player interactions. Data centers specifically for the Oceania region are added to enhance connectivity for players in locations like New Zealand and Australia, separate from the data centers intended for Japan.
