Fight Club Ending Explained
Fight Club's ending twist has inspired numerous other stories over the years due to its thought-provoking nature and the deeper themes it represents. However, the ending itself is rather sudden: upon discovering that Tyler Durden is a figment of his imagination, the Narrator shoots himself and stands with Marla as they watch the destruction of the city skyline. This scene has various implications, one of which is that the Narrator cannot be considered a reliable narrator after the twist.
As most of what the audience saw in Fight Club didn't actually happen as the Narrator experienced it, the ending becomes even more ambiguous. Nonetheless, the scene can be interpreted as the Narrator finally freeing himself from Tyler's grasp. He acknowledges that he cannot stop Project Mayhem's plan and simply watches as it unfolds. The result of this is that the other Project Mayhem groups around the world are likely to succeed in their mission, which deals a significant blow to the consumerist society that Tyler was rebelling against.
It's easy to misinterpret the ending, given that everything that occurred prior is already in question. Nonetheless, the destruction that the Narrator and Marla observe appears to genuinely be happening, and the protagonist appears to have fully regained control of his actions. Therefore, the ending of Fight Club should be viewed without the cynicism that the twist casts over most of the movie's events.
Fight Club Plot Explained
The main character of Fight Club is a nameless insomniac who is dissatisfied with his job as a recall specialist and the materialism it brings. He attends support groups for illnesses he doesn't have as a form of therapy, but when Marla Singer starts attending the same groups, he feels like she's calling out his deception. He confronts her and they agree to split the groups. On a flight, he meets Tyler Durden, who tells him he's trapped by consumerism. The protagonist's apartment explodes, so he moves in with Tyler and starts participating in consensual fistfights that eventually lead to the creation of Fight Club. Tyler also introduces him to Project Mayhem, a group that engages in vandalism. The protagonist quits his job and uses company funds to support the group. Tyler disappears, and the protagonist tries to stop Project Mayhem when they start destroying buildings that contain credit card records. He learns that Tyler was just a figment of his imagination and that he is actually the one responsible for the destruction. In an attempt to stop himself, he shoots himself in the mouth and collapses. Marla arrives and they watch as the city skyline crumbles.

How did the FightClub book end?
The famous conclusion of the movie doesn't exactly follow the novel's ending, which concludes in a slightly different way. After the narrator shoots himself in the book, intending to kill Durden, he loses consciousness and wakes up in a mental hospital, believing that he has gone to heaven.
What's significant is that it's revealed that the narrator's alter ego could still make a comeback, with hospital staff members approaching him and explaining that they belong to Project Mayhem and that Tyler is expected to return.
Interestingly, author Chuck Palahniuk recently commented on this, saying, "Ironically, the way the Chinese have changed it, they've almost exactly aligned the ending with the book's ending, rather than Fincher's ending, which was a more visually impressive ending. So in a way, the Chinese have brought the ending back to the book a little bit."
