Later that year, Mäder competed in the 2021 Vuelta a España. Despite facing a setback of three minutes in the initial eight stages, he displayed impressive performance from stage nine onwards, securing a seventh-place finish in the mountain stage to Alto de Velefique.

Throughout the race, Mäder served as a support rider for Jack Haig, showcasing consistent strength. On stage 17, which concluded at Lagos de Covadonga, Mäder crossed the finish line with the leading group, just a minute and a half behind the race leader, Primož Roglič. This result propelled him into the top ten of the general classification.

The following day, during the race's demanding stage to Altu d'El Gamoniteiru, Haig and Mäder achieved fifth and seventh place finishes, respectively, trailing by nearly a minute. Mäder's performance elevated him to eighth place overall. On the penultimate stage, Mäder, Haig, Roglič, Enric Mas, and Adam Yates formed a five-man breakaway that successfully distanced themselves from the main group of contenders.
