The Twitter account of the Vandegrift High School football team tweeted Sunday, honoring Graylan and saying he was “a friend to everyone.”

The tweet read: “Graylan, we love you. Always smiling, a friend to everyone, truly inspiring to anyone that knew you. Fierce competitor at all times. There is no one else like you. You will be missed forever and we will always keep you in our heart. Rest in Peace, Gray.”

What Happened To Graylan Spring?

Graylan was sitting in a Nissan Versa driven by Micah McAfoose who was a former baseball player for the Lumberjacks. The car they were in collided with the trailer of the 18-wheeler when traveling on Highway 58 north of Corrigan, according to a report by the Lufkin Daily News.

Corrigan Police Department's press release said the 18-wheeler turned left on the highway from Plant Road and then into the path of the Nissan. After the vehicle hit the trailer, it lodged under the trailer and became stuck.

How Did Graylan Spring Die?

Micah was pronounced dead at the spot and Graylan was airlifted to a Conroe hospital.

The press release said the driver of the 18-wheeler did not suffer any injuries and the wreck is now under investigation by CPD.

Colby Carthel, the Lumberjacks head football coach, said Graylan was a true champion.

He said, “Our hearts are broken at the loss of Graylan, and our prayers go out to the amazing Spring family,” Carthel said in a statement from SFA. “What a tremendous loss for those of us fortunate to know Graylan. He was a true champion, both on and off the field, and his legacy will love on forever within the Lumberjack football program.”

The Vandegrift chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes also said it was organizing a prayer service for Graylan and his family on Tuesday. There would be a candlelight vigil for both Graylan and Micah at Homer Bryce Stadium on SFA’s campus in Nacogdoches at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

This tragedy shocked the community of Vandegrift High School, where Graylan graduated from class ’22 after being a 2-year letter-winner there.

Micah McAfoose also died in this accident. In a statement, the University said about the passing of Micah that counselors would be available to students at the SFA Health and Wellness Hub for emergency walk-ins from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

Stephen F. Austin State University has said its condolences to those that have been affected by this collision and wishes a speedy recovery for Graylan himself.
