Grim Fandango Remastered Wiki

Grim Fandango is a point-and-click adventure game released in 1998, directed by Tim Schafer, and developed and published by LucasArts for Microsoft Windows. The game marked LucasArts' first foray into using 3D computer graphics overlaid on pre-rendered static backgrounds.

The game takes place in the Land of the Dead, a place that recently departed souls, represented as calaca-like figures, travel through before they reach their final destination. The game's protagonist, Manny Calavera, is a travel agent who tries to save the soul of Mercedes "Meche" Colomar, who recently arrived in the Land of the Dead.

Grim Fandango combines elements of the Aztec afterlife with film noir style, borrowing influences from classic films such as The Maltese Falcon, On the Waterfront, and Casablanca. The player must converse with various characters, examine objects, collect items, and solve puzzles to progress through the game. The game was praised for its art design and direction, and it is often considered one of the greatest video games of all time.

Despite its critical success, Grim Fandango was a commercial failure, which led to LucasArts' decision to end adventure game development and the decline of the adventure game genre. The success of Telltale's The Walking Dead in 2012 was seen as a revival of the adventure genre.

In 2014, Double Fine Productions, Tim Schafer's studio, acquired the license for Grim Fandango with the help of Sony following Disney's acquisition and closure of LucasArts as a video game developer. Double Fine produced a remastered version of the game, which was released in January 2015 for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, OS X, and Linux.

The remastered version featured improved graphics, controls, an orchestrated score, and directors' commentary. It was later released for Android and iOS in May 2015, for Nintendo Switch in November 2018, and for Xbox One in October 2020.

Grim Fandango Remastered Guide

Guide for Grim Fandango Remastered Trophies:

  1. Listening to dialogue: The majority of the trophies require you to listen to a line of dialogue spoken by an NPC or Manny. Keep in mind that the trophy won't pop up immediately upon hearing the line, but shortly after the conversation has ended.
  2. Avoid speed-running: If you're a veteran player, rushing through the puzzles will cause you to miss a number of trophies. Instead, take your time to explore all the dialogue options and revisit areas by loading a save or starting a new playthrough.
  3. Taking your time: New players will naturally come across a number of trophies as they play, provided that they take their time to explore all the dialogue options when having conversations with the various characters.
  4. Listening to optional dialogue: Exhaust the choices near the top of the list of available options to hear optional dialogue that will unlock trophies. The penultimate choice will progress the story while the last choice will end the conversation. Keep in mind that pressing Circle will select the highlighted dialogue choice, not "back-out" of the conversation.
  5. Missable trophies: Some trophies are especially missable and require you to go out of your way or deliberately avoid progressing a particular part of the story until you have interacted with a character or the environment using a specific item or under the correct circumstances. The majority of these are found in Years 2 and 4.
  6. Chronological order: The trophies are ordered chronologically according to how the story unfolds. Check your trophy list regularly and sync your trophies. If you notice a gap in your trophy list, check whether it is still obtainable in your current playthrough or whether you have progressed the story too far and will have to revert to a previous save.
  7. Out of order trophies: There is one instance in which the trophies appear to be out of chronological order. Make sure you have collected the latter Bronze trophy before the former.
  8. Cutscenes: You will be thrown into a cutscene as soon as you have completed all the puzzles in any given Year. It is recommended that you take a cautious approach to progressing the story if you are attempting to obtain all the trophies in a single playthrough.

Grim Fandango Remastered Gameplay

Grim Fandango is an adventure game where the player assumes the role of the protagonist, Manny Calavera, as he embarks on a journey through the underworld in pursuit of Mercedes "Meche" Colomar. The game was built using the GrimE engine and features 3D computer graphics overlaid on pre-rendered static backgrounds.

The player can control Manny's actions and movements using a keyboard, joystick, or gamepad, and the remastered edition also allows mouse control.

In Grim Fandango, the player must collect various objects scattered throughout the game world that can be used to solve puzzles and progress the story. Unlike earlier LucasArts adventure games, there is no heads-up display (HUD) to inform the player of objects or persons of interest. Instead, Manny will turn his head toward relevant objects or persons, allowing the player to interact with them.

Manny's inventory can be accessed by watching him pull each item in and out of his coat jacket, rather than through a traditional inventory system. The player can engage in dialogue with other characters to obtain hints or further the plot. The game features conversation trees, allowing the player to select dialogue options and progress the story.

Grim Fandango follows the LucasArts tradition of not allowing the player to die or become stuck in a no-win situation, ensuring that the game can always be completed.
