His father, Ioan Bowen Rees, was a multifaceted personality— a poet, essayist, mountaineer, and a White Robe Druid of the Gorsedd of Bards. Rhys's mother, Margaret Wynn Meredith, shared her husband's passion for writing and was a poet herself. Raised with a strong appreciation for Welsh culture and language, Rhys attended Ysgol Dyffryn Ogwen in Bethesda, Gwynedd, North Wales, and later pursued a degree in art at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Rhys's early exposure to music began as a teenager when he played drums for the North Wales band Machlud in 1985. He later became the frontman for Ffa Coffi Pawb, a Welsh-language band that gained prominence during the Cool Cymru movement, a cultural renaissance of the Welsh within the UK.
