Hades Gameplay

In the video game Hades, players assume the role of Zagreus, the son of Hades, as he attempts to escape the Underworld and reunite with his mother Persephone in the mortal realm. To aid in his quest, Zagreus receives support from the other Olympian gods, who provide him with gifts to fight off the guardians that protect the exit from the Underworld.

Throughout the game, players move through four main dungeons, each representing one of the regions of the Underworld: Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and the Temple of Styx. These regions are unlocked as players clear the previous locale. Hades is presented in an isometric view, with the player in control of Zagreus. Players begin a run-through of the game by fighting their way through a series of rooms. The rooms are randomly generated from a pool of predetermined layouts, and the enemies that appear are also randomly selected.

The game features a hack and slash combat system, with Zagreus having a primary and secondary attack depending on his chosen weapon (out of 6), a long-range magic "cast," a dash that provides momentary intangibility and mobility, and a summon attack that can call tremendous power from one of the gods. As players progress through the game, the Olympians will provide boons that offer a choice of three persistent boosts and effects for that run.

Each boon is themed based on the Olympian who grants it. Players move through rooms to climb up the Underworld and receive rewards after clearing each one. These rewards help them grow stronger and recover lost health points as Zagreus moves closer to his ultimate goal. However, if Zagreus' health points drop to zero while he has no "death defiance" tokens left, he is defeated and taken by the river Styx back to the House of Hades.

This acts as the game's overworld between attempts. Hades combines roguelike and dungeon-crawler elements, with some types of upgrades and currency being lost upon death and others being used to purchase permanent upgrades that affect all future attempts. Boss fights occur after clearing a certain number of rooms in a region and must be defeated to advance to the next region.

Between runs, players can explore the House of Hades before starting a new escape attempt. Here, players can use items recovered from run-throughs to impact the meta-game. They can unlock and upgrade abilities for Zagreus, construct new Underworld features that may appear in future run-throughs, or obtain or upgrade new weapons.

They can also interact with the various characters of the Underworld and improve their standing with them, providing narrative elements and additional quests with rewards. Players even have the option to romance some NPCs as the plot progresses. As players progress, they can manually customise and increase the difficulty of the gameplay by using the Pact of Punishment. This allows them to add extra challenges or modify some aspects of the game.

For example, the Pact can increase the attack power, health, or number of enemies on the run, or change the boss fights by adding an extra phase. By continuously increasing the difficulty, players can continue to receive rare rewards after runs, unlock special decorative items back at the house, and progress certain NPC subplots. Alternatively, players can activate God Mode, which makes the player character stronger after every failed run, allowing players having difficulty with the game to progress more easily and experience the full story of the game.
