Who is Harlem Globetrotters?
The Harlem Globetrotters are a famous basketball team from America. They're not like regular basketball teams because they do more than just play the game. They mix sports, acting, and funny stuff to entertain people.
They've been around for a long time and have played lots of games, more than 26,000! And they've done this in 124 different countries and places. But here's the funny thing: they often play against teams that aren't very good on purpose. Like the Washington Generals for many years, and later the New York Nationals.
When they come onto the court, they have a special song that everyone knows, called "Sweet Georgia Brown." It's whistled, and it's like their theme music. The Harlem Globetrotters have a cool mascot, too. It's a globe with a face and arms and legs, and they call it "Globie."
These days, the Harlem Globetrotters are owned by a company called Herschend Family Entertainment. So, they're not just a basketball team; they're also a show that brings smiles and laughter to people all over the world.
Harlem Globetrotters History
The Harlem Globetrotters started in 1926 in Chicago. At first, they were known as the Savoy Big Five and played at a famous dance place called the Savoy Ballroom. They played basketball games before the dances because not many people were coming to dance.
In 1928, some of the players left because of a disagreement. They formed a new team called the "Globe Trotters" and toured around southern Illinois. A man named Abe Saperstein joined the team as their manager and promoter.
By 1929, they were traveling around Illinois and Iowa as the "New York Harlem Globe Trotters." They picked the name "Harlem" because it was a hub for Black culture, and "Globetrotter" because they were going to play all over the world.
They were really good and won the World Professional Basketball Tournament in 1940. In 1948, they even beat a top white team, the Minneapolis Lakers, in a big game. But as the NBA started signing Black players in the 1950s, the Globetrotters became more famous for their entertaining tricks than their sports skills.
