In the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario helps Mallow, a "tadpole," retrieve a stolen frog coin. They discover the Smithy Gang has taken over and decide to collect the Star Pieces.
Mallow, revealed not to be a tadpole, joins Mario to find his true parents. Along the way, they meet Geno, a star spirit in a wooden doll, and together, they aim to repair the Star Road and defeat Smithy. The journey involves battling foes, saving Princess Toadstool, and liberating Nimbus Land from the clutches of Valentina. Eventually, Mario's party confronts Smithy in Bowser's castle, putting an end to his army creation and restoring peace. The collected Star Pieces mend the Star Road, and each character returns to their rightful place, marking a victorious celebration in the Mushroom Kingdom.
