Tekken 8

Tekken 8 is a fighting game released on January 26, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Arika, it's the eighth canon release in the Tekken series. The story, named "The Dark Awakens," unfolds six months after the previous game, focusing on the final clash between Kazuya Mishima and his son Jin Kazama. The game introduces 32 characters, each contributing to the narrative.

Announced in August 2022 at Evo 2022 and officially presented in September at Sony's State of Play event, Tekken 8 was developed using Unreal Engine 5. It incorporates new elements like the "Heat" system and "Tornado" hits. The online mode features Arcade Quest, including tournaments, avatars, and special in-game currency. The game underwent tests for stability and had a demo in December 2023.

The first season pass, with downloadable content and characters, was available during the pre-order period. Tekken 8 received critical acclaim upon release for its series progression and aggressive gameplay, with some calling it the best since Tekken 3.

Tekken 8 Gameplay

Tekken 8 keeps the familiar fighting game style of its predecessors. The producer, Katsuhiro Harada, emphasized a more aggressive gameplay approach, introducing the "Heat" system. In "Heat" mode, characters deal chip damage, gain extra moves, and alter some move properties, encouraging proactive play. The timer stops with strategic moves. Guarding against heavy attacks or Heat State characters causes chip damage, but unlike previous games, recoverable health only restores through attacking opponents.

The game brings technical updates, modifying the "Rage" system into "Heat Smash." The "Screw" mechanism is replaced by a "Tornado" extender, causing a ground-bound state. Certain stages have hazards like breakable walls and floors, and explosive interactions that launch damaged opponents.

Tekken Plot

Six months after Heihachi Mishima's death, Jin, Lars, and Lee ambush Kazuya in New York. Jin loses control of his devil during the battle. Kazuya announces a new King of Iron Fist Tournament, threatening destruction for losing nations.

During qualifiers, Jin, recovering, spars with Lars and discovers a loss of devil powers. In Japan, he meets Reina, a Mishima descendant, and secures a tournament spot. Reina joins Jin, hiding her true intentions.

Elsewhere, Zafina warns Claudio about Kazuya. Leo learns about Azazel and the Devil Gene from their father. At the Rome tournament, Lars seeks UN support, and Claudio, Zafina, and Xiaoyu infiltrate. Kazuya manipulates events, resurrecting Azazel and becoming a True Devil.

Jin believes the Kazama Sanctum holds answers. Yggdrasil, UN forces, Leroy, and Reina battle Kazuya's forces. Jin falls into a deep slumber. Facing his devil self, Jin accepts and regains control. Jin saves Lars from Kazuya's attack, purging Devil Genes in a final battle.

Jin departs with Xiaoyu, leaving Kazuya unconscious. The world celebrates freedom, combatants help restore Manhattan, Leo and Niklas continue, Yggdrasil and UN celebrate, and Zafina and Claudio survive.

In a mid-credit scene, Reina survives, vowing revenge with her Devil Form, possessing the Devil Gene.
