What Is Monopoly All About?

The multiplayer board game Monopoly has an economic focus. Players move about the game board by rolling two dice, purchasing and selling properties, and then developing them with homes and hotels. Gamers try to bankrupt their rivals by collecting rent from them. Tax squares, Community Chest cards, and Chance cards are further ways to win or lose money. Every time they pass "Go," players are given a stipend, but they also risk becoming locked up and being unable to leave unless they fulfill one of three requirements. There are house rules, countless variations in editions, numerous spin-offs, and associated media. Due to its local licensing in more than 103 countries and its publication in more than 37 languages, Monopoly has ingrained itself into the fabric of global popular culture.

Monopoly Game

Before starting a game of Monopoly, it is important to ensure that all the necessary components are present. The most recent edition of the game includes the following items:

  • Gameboard
  • Eight tokens
  • 28 title deed or property cards
  • 16 Chance cards
  • 16 Community Chest cards
  • 32 houses
  • 12 hotels
  • Two dice
  • Monopoly money pack
  • Instructions

It is worth noting that the game pieces have undergone changes over time. In 2013, the iron token was replaced with a cat, and in 2017, after a public vote that garnered over 4.3 million responses, Hasbro decided to replace the boot, wheelbarrow, and thimble with a T-Rex, rubber ducky, and penguin, respectively.

Monopoly Rules

Each player starts with a bankroll of $1,500. The first player is chosen at random before the game, and players thereafter take turns one at a time. A typical turn starts with the dice rolling and moves a piece of the equivalent number of squares clockwise around the board. Players move once more if they roll doubles after finishing that part of their turn. A player who rolls three sets of doubles in a row during one turn has been "caught speeding" and is instantly imprisoned rather than moving the amount indicated by the third roll of the dice.

A player receives $200 from the bank if they touch or pass the "Go" space. Gamers who land on Income Tax or Luxury Tax must pay the bank the specified sum. In earlier iterations of the game, paying income tax came with two options: either a $200 flat cost or 10% of overall net worth (including the current values of all the properties and buildings owned). Before making a decision, no calculations could be done, and there was no room for error. The calculating option was dropped from the official regulations in 2008, and the Luxury Tax was also raised from $75 to $100 at the same time. Landing on Free Parking is not rewarded or penalized.

After a player owns every property in that color group, then and only then may properties be developed. They must then each develop evenly. Before another house may be built, one must already be on each property of that color. A group's properties must all be one house level or closer apart from one another.

How To Play Monopoly

Monopoly is a game where players begin with a fixed amount of money, select their tokens, and take turns rolling two dice to move around the board. The following is a step-by-step guide to the gameplay:

  • The banker distributes $1,500 to each player and rolls the dice to determine the first player.
  • The player with the highest roll starts the game, and the order of play goes from highest to lowest.
  • On their turn, a player rolls the dice and moves their token to the number of spaces indicated.
  • If a player rolls doubles, they roll again and move their token twice as many spaces.
  • If a player lands on an unowned space, they can purchase it from the bank.
  • If a player lands on a space owned by another player, they must pay rent as stated on the property card.
  • Players can buy houses and hotels to increase rent on their properties and collect more from other players.
  • The player with the most money and who causes all the others to go bankrupt is declared the winner. However, the game has more nuances than this.
