Persona 3 Reload Gameplay

Persona 3 Reload is a remake of the original Persona 3, featuring updated graphics and gameplay mechanics inspired by later Persona games. The protagonist, a high school student, gains the ability to summon a Persona and joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.) to battle Shadows during the Dark Hour.

The game introduces new features, such as expanded activities in the Iwatodai Dorm, including conversations with dorm residents, cooking, gardening, and watching films. Players can strengthen Social Stats by performing these tasks, which helps in interacting with Social Links. The game also improves the map display, adds fast travel options, and enhances the in-class questions and exploration mechanics.

Tartarus, the dungeon in the game, remains largely unchanged but features more environmental variety and visual effects. The battle system allows players to take direct control over party members or let the CPU dictate their behavior. The interface is overhauled to resemble Persona 5, with additional commands and skills, including an improved version of the "Baton Pass" skill. Overall, Persona 3 Reload offers a refreshed experience of the original game with modernized features and gameplay elements.

Persona 3 Reload Development

Atlus started developing a remake of Persona 3 in 2019, shifting most of P-Studio's staff from Persona 5 Royal to work on it. The game, called Persona 3 Reload, was seen as important due to the original Persona 3's influence on the series. It posed unique challenges as it was developed on Unreal Engine 4, unlike Atlus' proprietary engine used in previous games. The name "Reload" was chosen to convey its status as a definitive edition, similar to Persona 5 Royal.

The game aims to faithfully recreate the original Persona 3 experience, including new scenes and events, but it won't include content from Persona 3 FES or Persona 3 Portable, like "The Answer" epilogue or the female protagonist. However, elements from FES added to the main story would be included.

The development team also planned to make alterations to the game's controls and map design, particularly redesigning the main dungeon, Tartarus, to be more immersive. They wanted players to enjoy Persona 3 at the same level of quality as recent Persona games. The character models were based on Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight but were otherwise created from scratch with adjustments. Additional content for party members Koromaru and Shinjiro Aragaki was confirmed, along with the retention of the "Aeon" social link with Aigis from Persona 3 FES. Persona 3 Reload was in its final stages of development as of August 2023.

Persona 3 Reload Release Date

In July 2022, Atlus conducted a survey in Japan about remakes and re-releases of past games, including Persona 3. The survey revealed strong interest in a Persona 3 remake. In April 2023, leaked footage suggested that a Persona 3 remake was in development. The leaked footage showed Yukari Takeba in a battle with a Shadow. Later, Atlus renewed a web domain speculated to be connected to the Persona 3 remake. In early June 2023, Atlus renewed the web domain and accidentally uploaded the reveal trailer for the remake, titled Persona 3 Reload, alongside a spin-off title, Persona 5 Tactica. Both games were officially announced later that week. Sega hosted a panel at Anime Expo 2023, where they showcased the game's English dub.

Between October 2023 and January 2024, Atlus West released featurettes about the development and legacy of Persona 3. On January 23, 2024, a live-action commercial for Persona 3 Reload featuring actor Aidan Gallagher was released, receiving negative reactions for its tonal disparity.

Persona 3 Reload was released on February 2, 2024, for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as Windows. It was available on Xbox Game Pass from launch. Special editions, including a Digital Deluxe, Digital Premium, and physical "Aigis Edition," were also available. A collaboration with Cerevo resulted in a 1:1 replica of the Evoker, and a collaboration with Koikeya produced limited edition potato chips and charms based on Persona 3: Reload and Persona 5 Royal.
