Age of Wonders 4

Age of Wonders is a turn-based strategy game that was co-developed by Triumph Studios and Epic MegaGames, and published by Gathering of Developers in 1999. The game underwent a lengthy development cycle, initially being developed under the name World of Wonders for MS-DOS and then upgraded for Windows 95. However, the team ultimately scrapped this version of the game in 1997 and restarted development, resulting in the final version of Age of Wonders.

The game was well-received by critics and had moderate commercial success, selling around 200,000 units globally by 2001. Its popularity led to the development of four sequels: Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, Age of Wonders III, and Age of Wonders: Planetfall. In 2010, the first game was re-released on GOG.com and Steam.

Age of Wonders originally incorporated several role-playing game elements, but these were dropped when simultaneous turns were implemented. The music in the game was composed by Michiel van den Bos, who also composed music for other notable titles such as Deus Ex and the Unreal series of games. Age of Wonders 4 released on May 2, 2023.

The music files are in Impulse Tracker (.IT) format, with 20 tunes in the main gameplay and four other tunes for different situations within the game. A 21st tune called "In The Company of Elves" was included with the demo version of the game, but not with the final release. In the demo version, all songs except the title song were in the Scream Tracker (.s3m) format.

The Age of Wonders franchise has been around for over two decades and the latest installment, Age of Wonders 4, is still going strong. However, some PC players have reported encountering errors and issues with the game, such as random crashes. Some players experience crashes without any accompanying error message, while others receive an unexpected graphics driver error (0x887A0006). To help players fix these crashes, the following solutions are available.

Age of Wonders Gameplay

Age of Wonders is a hexagonal, turn-based strategy game where units are grouped into parties of up to eight and occupy one tile. Movement points are  and replenished at the start of each turn. The game features a single-player campaign playable from two sides and many user-created maps that can be played in various modes, including hotseat, LAN, internet, and email.

Up to 12 players can join a single game, and simultaneous turns are available only in single player and live multiplayer games. The sequential turn system is used for PBEM, hotseat, and combat. In Age of Wonders, there are altars located throughout the game board that possess different types of magic and can be utilized as powerful weapons.

To activate an altar, a player must gain control of it and then choose a target location within a certain range before casting the spell. Altars require 500 mana to be activated and recharge at a rate of 50 mana per turn, taking 10 turns to reach full charge. Players with sufficient mana crystals can fire an altar multiple times in succession without waiting for it to recharge.

Spells in the game are categorized into three types - unit spells which enhance individual units, combat spells which inflict direct damage or hinder the enemy during battles, and global spells which impact the terrain, structures, and groups of units across the entire map or summon magical creatures to assist the player.

The mana cost for each spell varies depending on its complexity, and some of the more potent unit and global spells can take multiple turns to cast. Additionally, counterspells can be used to negate and dispel unit and global enchantments. Each spell is associated with one of the eight magic spheres: Life, Death, Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Cosmos, and Secret/Chaos.

Mana is required to research and cast spells, which is obtained from magic nodes. Certain nodes are general and provide a small amount of mana to any caster, while others are linked to one of the elemental planes and only supply a specific kind of energy. Thus, a player who has chosen the Fire sphere can only use a Fire node. Heroes with Spell-Casting can also generate mana, with the King/Leader generating more than other heroes.
