Most HBO Max service providers do not provide a free HBO Max trial to new customers. If there is a free HBO Max subscription or promotional offer, you will see a mention of the free HBO Max trial when you register. A free HBO Max trial allows you to watch anything on HBO Max. However, HBO Max availability and free trial terms may vary from time to time, so it is important to check HBO Max website or HBO Max app for the latest information.

How To Get A HBO Max Free Trial?

As of today, April 3rd, HBO Max doesn't offer a free trial directly through their service.  There was a free trial period in the past, but it's not currently available.

Here are some alternative ways to try out HBO Max:

Check with your mobile carrier or internet provider

Some providers may offer HBO Max as part of a bundle or package that includes a free trial.

Look for promotions with other services

Occasionally, HBO Max partners with other services to offer a free trial. For instance, there used to be a promotion for new Roku devices that included a free trial of HBO Max.

See if someone you know is willing to share their account

This is not ideal  because it relies on someone else's permission, but  if you know someone who has HBO Max, they might be willing to let you use their account for a short period.

Note: Keep in mind that even with these alternatives, there may be restrictions or limitations.  Always make sure to read the fine print before signing up for anything.

Why Was HBO Max Free Trial Canceled?

When HBO Max was first launched in May of 2020, it came with a seven day free trial, which was a great way to see what the hype was all about. However, it appears that Max no longer offers a free trial, and the worst part is that it doesn’t offer free trials through any of its add-ons. The only other ways to get HBO Max for a few days is to use the Amazon Prime video channels or the Hulu add-on. These were the last options available before HBO Max discontinued its free trial.

HBO Max stopped offering a free trial in early December of 2020, shortly after it launched in May of that year. There's no official reason from the company, but some possible reasons may include:

  • Free trials can lead to people signing up, watching the content they're interested in during the trial, and then canceling before they're charged. By eliminating the free trial, Max may have hoped to convert more users into paying subscribers.
  • Max launched with a robust library of content, including popular HBO shows, Warner Bros. movies, and original Max productions. They might have felt confident that the content itself would be enough to attract subscribers without the need for a free trial incentive.
  • Around the same time, other streaming services like Disney+ and Netflix were also scraping their free trial offers. Max may have decided to follow suit to stay competitive in the market.

How Much Does HBO Max Cost?

Max, formerly known as HBO Max, offers a few subscription tiers with varying prices:

  1. Ad-Supported Plan: This plan costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 if you pay for a year upfront, which saves you around 16%.  This tier includes ads during shows and movies.
  2. Ad-Free Plan: This tier eliminates ads and costs $15.99 per month. You can also prepay for a year at $149.99, bringing the monthly cost down to $12.49 (a savings of about 22%).
  3. Ultimate Ad-Free Plan: This top tier provides ad-free viewing, allows for streaming on up to four devices simultaneously, and offers downloads for offline watching. The cost is $19.99 per month, but you can prepay for a year at $199.99, effectively lowering the monthly price to $16.66 (a savings of about 16%).

How To Get A Free Trial For HBO Max Via Amazon Prime Video?

Unfortunately, you cannot get a free trial of Max through Amazon Prime Video as of today, April 3rd, 2024. In the past, there was an option to add Max as a Prime Video Channel with a free trial through Amazon, but that is no longer available.

Here's why you can't get a free trial through Prime Video:

  1. Max Ended Free Trials: Max itself stopped offering free trials directly in December 2020. This decision likely applied to all channels offering Max, including Prime Video.
  2. Prime Video Channels May Not Offer Individual Trials: While Prime Video Channels allows subscribing to various services through Prime, these channels may not offer their own separate free trials on top of the Prime membership trial.
