Minecraft

Mojang Studios developed Minecraft, which is a sandbox game. Markus "Notch" Persson created the game in the Java programming language. It was initially tested privately, but it became available to the public in May 2009, and it was fully released in November 2011. Notch later stepped down, and Jens "Jeb" Bergensten took over development. With over 238 million copies sold and almost 140 million active monthly players as of 2021, Minecraft is the best-selling video game in history and is available on various platforms. Players in Minecraft get to explore a three-dimensional world that is blocky and procedurally generated, with nearly infinite terrain. Players can extract raw materials, craft tools, and items, and construct structures, earthworks, and machines.

How to join a Minecraft server?

Minecraft multiplayer mode is built upon servers. To play together, you need to be on the same server. While there are many public servers out there, creating a private server allows you to play only with your friends. Here's how you can join an existing Minecraft: Java Edition server or create your own multiplayer server:

Join a server:

  • Launch Minecraft and select Multiplayer.
  • Click Add Server.
  • In the Server Address box, enter the host server's address and click Done. This might be an IP address or a URL.
  • Wait for the server to connect, and when it appears in the list, select it and click Join Server.

Create and join your own server:

  • Launch a web browser and navigate to minecraft.net/download. Scroll down and click Java Edition Server.
  • Find and download the Minecraft server software.
  • Create a new folder and place the .jar file you downloaded inside of it.
  • Create a plain text document called "start.txt."
  • Copy the command text from the Minecraft server download webpage.
  • Paste the command text into your start.txt document.
  • Rename the "minecraft_server.1.18.2.jar" portion of the text to "server.jar."
  • Change the RAM allocation for your server in this line of code.
  • Click File, then "Save As…" and select "All Files (.)" and name the file "start.bat."
  • Double-click the "start.bat" file to run it.

How to join servers on Minecraft Xbox, PS4/ PS5, Switch, & Mobile?

  • Open Minecraft Bedrock and click on the "Play" button on the home screen.
  • Click on the "Servers" tab, which is located on the rightmost side of the top menu.
  • Minecraft will display a list of popular servers in the "Featured Servers" list. If you're interested in joining one, click on its name and then click the "Join Server" button in its description.
  • If you're not interested in the featured servers, scroll down to the bottom of the servers list and choose the "Add Server" option.
  • Enter the server's details, including the server name, server address, and port number (which is usually 19132 unless specified by the server manager) in the designated text boxes. Click the "Play" or "Save" button to save the server details.

How to join Minecraft servers on Java on Windows and Mac?

In contrast to the Bedrock version, the Java edition of Minecraft does not offer featured servers. Nevertheless, you can easily find reliable servers to join by referring to our list of the best Minecraft servers. Here's how you can join a server on macOS and Windows:

  • Launch Minecraft Java Edition and click on the "Multiplayer" button, which can be found below the "Singleplayer" button for offline gameplay.
  • A warning message about online servers may appear. After reading the message, click "Proceed" to continue.
  • If the server you want to join is hosted locally, it will automatically appear on your screen. If not, click the "Add Server" button. Alternatively, use the "Direct Connection" button to connect to a server without saving it to the server list.
  • Enter the server address and name, and enable resource packs if necessary. Then, click "Done" to save and join the server.
