The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, located in Cleveland, celebrates the history and cultural significance of rock music, honoring those who have made significant contributions to its creation and spread. Created in 1983 by influential figures in the music industry, such as Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records and Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone magazine, the museum and hall of fame were established by the non-profit Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Inducting its first honorees in 1986, the foundation chose Cleveland as the museum's location due to disc jockey Alan Freed's coining of the term "rock and roll" there in the 1950s and the city's ability to secure public and private funding for the facility.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its list of Class of 2023 nominees on Wednesday, February 1st, featuring 14 musicians eligible for induction this year. The nominees are Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, A Tribe Called Quest, The White Stripes, and Warren Zevon.

This year's Rock Hall nominees are exceptional, with eight of the 14 artists being first-time candidates, including two (The White Stripes and Missy Elliott) who have made it to the shortlist in their debut year of eligibility. The nomination of Joy Division and New Order as a single entity is a departure from the norm, but not a first for the Rock Hall. Previous examples include the inductions of Parliament/Funkadelic in 1997, and the (Young) Rascals and Small Faces/Faces in 1997 and 2012, respectively.  From now until April 28th, fans can cast their vote for who they believe deserves induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They can do so either through the official website rockhall or by visiting the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland in person.

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees 2023

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its latest class of nominees, recognizing some of the biggest names in music, many of whom are nominated for the first time. The 2023 nominees cover a diverse range of musical genres, including Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, A Tribe Called Quest, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon. Out of the 14 nominees, over half are first-time inductees, including Crow, Elliott, Lauper, Michael, Nelson, Zevon, Joy Division/New Order, and The White Stripes.

Missy Elliott and The White Stripes became eligible for consideration in 2023, as Rock Hall requires that nominees have released their first commercial recordings at least 25 years prior to their nomination. Elliott's debut album "Supa Dupa Fly" and The White Stripes' first single "Let's Shake Hands" were released in 1997 and 1998 respectively.

"This remarkable list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates," said John Sykes, the chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, in a statement. "These artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps."

What Do The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame And The Louvre Have In Common?

Renowned architect I. M. Pei left his mark on two iconic institutions with his distinct designs. The first, a new grand entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, was the 68-foot tall glass pyramid addition completed in 1989. Despite initial controversy, it became a standout feature of the historic museum. Pei was later commissioned to design the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, where he created another pyramid or tent-like structure as the entrance, resembling a guitar neck and described as "open - like the music." This building was one of many notable works by Pei, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 102.
