Master Hsing Yun passed peacefully on Sunday at the Fo Guang Shan monastery he launched in Kaohsiung. Hsing Yun was 95. Taiwan has recognized one of its most influential and respected Buddhist monks as a man who encouraged international harmony and supported peaceful reunification across the Taiwan Strait. The monastery told them there would be no individual Buddhist ceremonies for him because he wanted to quit the world simply, but a tribute would be kept at the temple on February 13. Hsing Yun’s health had declined in current years after he suffered strokes in 2011 and also in 2016. Hsing Yun was admitted to a hospital before the Lunar New Year last month and doctors explained his situation as unstable.

Respected Master Hsing Yun, the founding patriarch of the Fo Guang Shan (Buddha’s Light Mountain) Buddhist Order, died away on Sunday (5 February) at 5 pm at the year of 95. Fo Guang Shan's official website verified the passing of Master Hsing Yun. Yet, there will be no funeral committee, separate obituaries, nor Buddhist ceremonies as the master wishes to hold his departure from this world simple. They will instead carry a tribute ceremony for the expert on 13 February at 9 am. The association will suspend any external activities from now on and will be unrestricted to the public for condolences from the time 9:00 am to 5:00 pm every day.

On the year 26 December 2011, Hsing Yun suffered a little ischemic stroke, his second in that year. In his older years, Hsing Yun started suffering from multiple health issues, including diabetes and close blindness. Hsing Yun passed on 5 February 2023 behind years of unstable health. Hsing Yun was 95. Per his wishes, he asked to be replaced by Fo Guang Shan so he could die peacefully. Hsing Yun's first exposure to Buddhism arrived from his grandmother, a practicing Buddhist and meditator. He joined the monastic life at the age of 12. Hsing Yun was first motivated by Buddhist modernism in 1945 while learning at Jiaoshan Buddhist College. There he knew about Buddhist teacher Taixu's rings for reform in Buddhism and the Sangha.
