Hugo Awards 2023 Overview

The 81st World Science Fiction Convention, Chengdu Worldcon, has revealed the finalists for the highly anticipated 2023 Hugo Awards, as well as the Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. The announcement was made on July 6th, 2023, through social media and the Chengdu Worldcon website.  A total of 1847 valid nominating ballots were received from members of the 2022 and 2023 World Science Fiction Conventions.

The final ballot voting will open on July 10th, and only members of Chengdu Worldcon will have the privilege to cast their votes and determine the winners of the prestigious 2023 Awards. Non-members have the option to purchase a membership at the Chengdu Worldcon website to participate in the voting process.  The winners of the 2023 Hugo Awards, Lodestar Award, and Astounding Award will be announced during a formal ceremony held on Saturday evening, October 21, 2023, at Chengdu Worldcon. 

Hugo Finalists 2023

The finalists for the 2023 Hugo Awards span a variety of categories, showcasing exceptional works in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Some of the notable contenders include Silvia Moreno-Garcia's "The Daughter of Doctor Moreau" and John Scalzi's "The Kaiju Preservation Society" for Best Novel, as well as Tamsyn Muir's "Nona the Ninth" and Mary Robinette Kowal's "The Spare Man." The Best Novella category features works like C.L. Polk's "Even Though I Knew the End" and Alix E. Harrow's "A Mirror Mended."

In the Best Novelette category, works such as Catherynne M. Valente's "The Difference Between Love and Time" and John Chu's "If You Find Yourself Speaking to God, Address God with the Informal You" have been recognized. Several outstanding short stories have also been nominated, including "D.I.Y." by John Wiswell and "Zhurong on Mars" by Regina Kanyu Wang.
